Most of the people who like anything remotely nerdy in my neck of the woods only like the kind of surface level series that's considered acceptable in quote unquote "polite society." Course if they like anime or manga, that means some TL;DR shonen with over 9000 chapters whose localization is either licensed by 4Kids or is on some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ service like CrunchyRoll - and if they wear any merch it's always a shirt or a hoodie.

The rare exception are those who instead of wearing it, plaster it all over their car. Granted, that just means they've got shoujo or harem/gachage on the brain instead.
