A study showed that about 40 percent of male MMO players play as female characters. Reasoning for this was widespread, but one of the bigger ones is people treat you nicer if they think you're a girl.

I'm male, so maybe I have no real insight here. I don't know what it's like to get constantly hit-on, or experience unwanted advances, or have people make negative assumptions about me based solely on my sex. I have experienced negativity from others though, and here's the best advice I can give regarding that:

Empathize. No matter how horrible the other person is, try to get into their shoes and brain. Figure out what makes them the way they are. Once you manage to do this, you feel more pity than anger regarding their conduct. Do this strictly for you own benefit. Don't use that viewpoint to get any kind of a reaction out of them. Don't say "I feel sorry for you.", because that won't help matters. Feel sorry for them, keep it to yourself, then use the tools at your disposal to remove the toxicity from your life. Report, block, and move on.

I wouldn't say "nicer" but they definitely seem to generally give girls & women more attention - which consequently will mean more of both good & bad attention.

If you can look past the bad, it might be worth it for the extra good.

That aside, I'm not entirely convinced all of that reasoning is sound as a lot of guys play as female characters just because they want a character that is nice to look at (& so consequently, a decent amount of women like to play as strong, attractive, male characters).

You just haven't been unfortunate enough then.
I'm male & I've experienced all of that - just not constantly.
(nor in games - but I've never played a game where mic chat was a regular thing. I don't even play multiplayer much or with many randoms.)

But I can assure you, the few times that I have [experienced the things you listed], have been unforgettable experiences, & not in a good way.

... Equality means everyone receives toxicity/trash talking. :gollum:

Well, this is true but it's not all the same.

Not that this particularly matters, because if we do somehow make everything all the same, the world will become blended to a point where everything is just the same dull shade of grey as everything else.

I used to play as a female character in old Runescape and scammed desperate guys out of their gold. It beat playing the game properly.

It was a fake study. Females who only played apps like Candy Crush were added as "female gamers" to boost it to something even. The study doesn't represent Steam or console users.
Actually the study was legit(ish). All it really was was a mathematical look at the demographics, not really a study. As u said most girls(around 68%) play cell phone games. Idk y I can't stand those things, but they like them. Only around 7% of girls routinely play online multiplayer games like CoD for example. In fact FPS is one of their least favorite genres.

Girls tend not to like pvp, especially in a competitive format, from what I can tell; and yes there r exceptions. But I'm no scientist or researcher.

Yeah we have a less competitive edge than guys and don't feel the need to measure our "e-peens" by being dominate in a game. Guys are naturally more competitive and aggressive by nature.

and also some games have a higher female player count than others, FFXIV has a high number of girls playing, my FC(guild) is like 50% girls. The PvE and story focus along with player housing, glamouring, etc feels really appealing to myself and I guess other girls.

Then ofcourse you have The Sims which is predominantly played by girls, I would say the majority of sim players are female.

and FPS, yeah they have a lower number, even lower if you go into the milisim sub category, I've been playing a milisim online recently and I stand out like a sore thumb since I have never seen another girl playing it, its mostly older men. But thats ok because being older they are not prone to being toxic, you do get toxicity obviously but its rare in a game with an average player age of 30+ I would say.

Here is the real answer:
eye candy thots have ruined video gaming, especially streaming platforms.
Twitch specifically had promoted any eye candy or even any average looking woman to stream, even if they were very bad at the games, simply because simp's will watch them and comment stuff like "queen" and similar garbage.
You wanna play a game without herassmint? Don't make it obvious you're female. Simple as that.
Well yes, but can you really blame the girls for this? They just saw an opportunity and went for it, nothing wrong with that. The real problem are the simps and attention-givers, if people acted normally around girls they can't even touch we'd have a lot less cyberbullying and thot enabling, a win for everyone

about that domination as a clan leader I have had many times female players pulling the you hate girls / you are racist card on me when I kicked them for 1 reason : they failed to keep the clans rules and dragged the clan down .. they want to be in the best clan in the server yet not commit to it... sorry to join the marines... I not care you female or man but the same performance demands are for either.

I have noticed when playing female chars you get more freebees especially in servers with lots of asians.. I do find that uneasy and tell them quickly. keep your stuff I am male..
-
but I would not call the request for my facebook or discord before I tell I am man harasment.. it just shows how hopeless some man are

if I discriminate against anyone it is against younger players.. if they still have to get dads or moms permission or behave childish they are our.. I am in my 30s.. I gave class to runts.. I dont desire to manage a classroom in my freetime too.

as for girls.. if the girl is able to be one of the guys.. I quite like one in the team.. sure she is going to be treathed like a woman in the marines or in contruction would be.. there would be flirty jokes and aplenty.. but I fully expect her to just join in this brawling and make a good rebuke too.. a bit of feist is much apreciated;)
-you can hear me say things like hey mike I thought that dana over here was the lady of the team.. turns out she brought her sister..
dana : and my baby sister at that.. given how my "balls" are bigger..
*entire team laughs..

I unironically admire her, it's a genius move to grab the money and run, I don't think she even posts anything anymore now that she can just invest and live comfortably for the rest of her life. A+

I'm so tired of sexism, every time i play a multiplayer game there is at least one type of person who is sexist and toxic for no reason just because i'm a girl who plays games, even with a report nothing happens really, i just don't get it why girls can't play games without it being an issue. it just takes all the fun away and it becomes really annoying at some point hearing the same sexist jokes over and over, every time i speak about it more and more offended males get mad about it, this wasn’t a big deal years ago, i don’t understand why bullying really exist, many people can be very heartless towards ANYONE who plays games for example, there’s people who play videogames because they feel sad and it’s a way of coping for them, they get online and BOOM there is that one dude who thinks its funny to make fun of someone else for any kind of reason, just to make him/her about themselves, you never know what anyone goes through on their daily life, so think before you speak.

nice bait

to anyone who legit takes this seriously

look i have both done and been called every slur and term in the dictionary before i hit legal adult age on xbox consoles and online.

It's video games comes with the territory. If you don't want that ♥♥♥♥ stay away from public matches. Companies are not day cares they're not supposed to monitor you. If it's a rated M

RATED M

as in RATED M

AS IN RATED M FOR MATURE AS IN ADULTS

deal with that ♥♥♥♥ on your own. Block or make your own server. It's the same as online as irl. Doxxing it's called though crossing wires. If you're really trying to take people down b/c of how they act and talk you're only making it worse by banning them or making them lose their job or reputation soiled. Then they got nothing to lose they'll start radicalizing more.

Again just block mute don't use a mic and don't mention you're a girl. If you do it's literal attention hogging and deserve whats coming to you trying to make a statement when people just wanna shut off their brains and blow off steam.

I'm assuming you state it first and flat out
if not and use a mic don't or private chat
if they somehow figure out you're a girl other ways block em mute or private servers / ignore em.
Anything else i can't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ help you other than to tell you just to grow some thicker skin and maybe insult them back. Also note it's just banter. If you take it to heart stay away from online games and more so video games. You're not emotionally mature for it.

vice versa or rather same for people who spout ♥♥♥♥ about racism and just horrid behaviors in-game. Anything other than cheating again deal with that ♥♥♥♥ on your own. It's not the company's role to act as an interloper or mediator. School is over and you gotta take your lumps like a man or woman or whatever; anything but children!

side note: any X company that does internet police they're hiding shady ♥♥♥♥. I'm calling it look at ♥♥♥♥ like Blizzard or Ubisoft and then tell me that they're not pandering to get people to double think like omg how could they be sexist frat styled work environment when they did X and supported Y and did things for groups like Z.

Just turn the page OP as what exists, exists in all shapes and sizes everywhere in our lives. Its just the diversity pond we all swim in.

If you don't want to then think fast, think smart with comebacks or take some of the fine advice to be found from others on this thread.

Man, Woman, the controller, the keyboard n mouse know not, nor care.

Its only you that puts meaning and form to others, think about it.

tl;dr

don't put meaning into it

don't give a ♥♥♥♥ and just play the game. If you let them get to you; then you're just doing what they sought out to be or a side effect and they'll keep on doing it if it gets a rise outta ye.

I completely understand you. I may not deal with your pain 1 to 1, but I assure you it's common. It's disgusting. Women are treated like objects a lot on games, where people will harass them just because of their gender and say ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like "send your tits." Either that, or women are expected to not be good at games.

There is a ton of elitism and that's because in multiplayer competitive games, the main demographic are man-children. 30 year old privileged men who play games everyday and never have to work a day in their life because they live with their mother. Or, actual children, who don't know much better because they are raised in it or use it as a way to be toxic without consequences.

It is horrible. It sucks. But there's so little that can be done about it. So that's why I don't touch public servers on games like that. Or play them at all. And steam is the last place you'd want to talk about it, since aforementioned man-children rule here. Trolls are super common due to how anonymous and big steam is, along with it's origins.

I'd suggest to play games without a mic on. (or games that don't need one.) Or, simply call these types of people out on their ♥♥♥♥. Don't let them try and stop you from enjoying the game that you bought. Don't submit to them trying to gate-keep you. I'm sorry this has happened to you and I hope you can eventually continue to enjoy yourself without things like this in the way.

tl;dr

could've just said this

the rest was unecessary tbh

it's like that on public games alot b/c it's a lawless land. Anything not cheating in hacking form will be disregarded. Just make your own server or play on an active moderated server.

i keep saying it's not the company or dev's job to moderate games. Hell it's not even the steam moderator's job to do that. Public servers are there. On PC you got the rights to make your own and run it as a lawless land or a dictatorship. And in that case also no one can complain b/c it would be your server not theirs.
