Toasters have changed actually. They've gotten worse, likely due to cost cutting measures.

Regarding the original question, uhm, no. Even the best toast ever toasted isn't worth the risk burning the house down, and the toast itself would probably turn out burnt as well. Probably best to just transfer the bread to a frying pan, if it is still any good.
