Do games come with manuals anymore ? And where are they ?
Just curious if there is a default location I should be looking for manuals ? I just bought three games. Kingdom Wars II, The Plague: Kingdom Wars, and Medieval Kingdom Wars all RTS all would benefit from a manual but I can't find one for any of them.
This made me go through my steam library a bit and look for some Manuals to other games. Very difficult to find and I only found a couple in the 'local files'... Old steam used to have game manuals fairly easy to find on the left of the screen when the game was selected... Anybody know the default place I'm supposed to look now ?
I know now they are a bit like a thing of the past , but there must be some support for older games that would have a digital version of the game manual included with the game purchase....

Depends on the developer. In game tutorials have basically taken the place of manuals. A lot of games just load all of that information into the game if it needs to be referenced. On Steam, if a developer has uploaded a manual for their game, you should see a link to it on the game page under Additional Content in the sidebar.

Sometimes there is a button that leads to a manual on the Steam store page. Other times F1 will lead to a built-in manual.
There are plenty of websites that have readable guides. Like IGN. Or fandom.wiki. Just search for "title guide".
YouTube guides kinda suck. You have to keep listening and never know if they will give good info.

Yes.

You'll see a "Manual" link on the far right of the screen in a Steam product's page. It's in the "Sidebar" section, usually right below the various bits of developer/publisher info and the like.

It will be a .pdf download and is served to you by Steam.

If there is no manual there, the developer did not submit one. So, look for online sources usually linked as "Stickies" in the game's Discussion forum. Many complex games will have at least partially useful Wikis online, too. Check the Developer''s own website for additional links.

Sadly, the days of always getting some kind of Manual with a game are long gone.. But, it still does happen from time to time.

PS: Some games do also include a Manual in the installation, but not all. They "should." Some of those can be quite large file-sizes, though. As you did, always check. Also check User directories in your OS, too.

It would be helpful to have Steam notify the player if a manual has been included in the download. I've "discovered" some, myself, when I had no idea they'd be there in my directory structure.

Some games also have a "manual" on their library page. Just select a game from the left panel and if it has a manual, it'll show up on the right side.
When instruction manuals were fun instead of depressing

Good point! It's also sometimes a bit more easy to see, there, too.

Otherwise? It's nestled near the "Discussions" link, from what I could see from a brief survey of my games that I know have manuals.

It's good to know that there are plenty of links to manuals. I've never seen any of the other ones that people have pointed out though. It'd be great if Valve could make them all a little more visible.
Hmmm...

Last decent manual was Bulletstorm, so 2009 or so. The last great manual was PSX era, and the Working Designs localization of Lunar : Silver Star Story. The real prime times for them were SNES/NES and PSX days.

Now days you have a tutorial as others said or you can simple open up the game options and look up the controls.

I had one of the Civlization games, purchased from a real store btw, and the manual was wonderfully "hefty." It had... everything in it.

I've also had game manuals that were spiral-bound, because no glue could have held together that number of pages in that format.

These days, AdobeReader knows you're about to touch it before you even buy a game that has a pdf manual...:/

This photo linked helped a lot after seeing exactly where they were supposed to be I could see more clearly if there was one or not.

I agree most games just seem to want to do that walk-through thing at the beginning of a game. With RTS though you could go straight to skirmish mode with a glance or two at a manual. Sometimes those early game l levels are a bit too much.
Thanks again for the suggestions of where to look and the clarification of what steam does if there is a manual provided by the publishers
I never read the manuals. But they were necessary to find specific words to use the security code wheel back in the day.

Oh crap. I forgot about wirebound. Sid Myer's Pirates had a huge one. CD key in the cover, maps, and tons of nautical and pirate stuff, from the different ships, captains, pirate history, the different political factions by age, and more. I love the game, but it was almost more fun to read the manual.
Isn't that the thing where the developers would tell you thanks for buying their game?
I have not seen one in a long time.
Anyone remember the massive and thorough manual for Janes AH64D Longbow (rough title) helicopter sim. I think it was late 1990s
