Live Service Games, Should They Continue, or Should They Stop?
Hey there, I wanted to have a friendly discussion pertaining to the matter of live service games and how they've impacted the gaming industry. What are your thoughts? Have they benefited certain games, or have they been a detriment?

I'm the kind of person who likes to play a game, finish it, and then move on to something else. I'm generally not interested in games which regularly have shallow new content released by the developer to keep players coming back.

Also, microtransactions are the devil.
Don't play Rocket League. Microtransactions e v e r y w h e r e.

Basically this: if you don't want to pay... don't pay... if you don't want to play.... don't play.

This is just another whiny attempt to bash on DLC's because people want everything now and free. The whole OMG "microtransactions" are "evil" because it costs money... yes, and? so what.

Some people like playing games like this... if it's not for you, go play something else and stop being a pain complaining about it.

P.s.- "microtransactions" and "microagressions" are two words that need to go away in 2021... overused, misused, and meaningless.

I wouldn't exactly say that "microtransactions" as a term is something that needs to go away. They're definitely a thing. They're a double edged sword though. In most cases they only exist to net additional profits. However, I do believe Valve hit a sweet spot with CS:GO's cosmetics/lootboxes as they can be sold for usable Steam store credit to be used on anything the user desires. Hate em' as much as you want. You'd be lying to yourself if you can't admit the way they're implemented is nothing short of brilliant.

I don't mind paying for additional contents for as long it's not in a bling bag or lootboxe and not overly expensives.

I remember when "Disk locked DLC" first happened, and the opposition to it was pretty widespread, people didn't like it at all. Yet, somehow, they not only got away with it, but they've since got away with pushing it more, and farther. Because despite people's issues with these things, they turned around and bought these games anyway. This send the message to developers that they shouldn't care what you think because you're just gonna buy their slop anyway, and like it. And buy it again, and ultimately ask for seconds.
Oh man. Disk locked day one DLC should be a crime. You just bought the game, but sorry, you can't have all the goodies we put on the disk.

I am pretty close to it with in game advertising. Not like product placement. That really doesn't bother me much because if it is done right, it adds to immersion.

I am talking about that SOB in Dragon Age that wants you to gladly go on a new adventure to a far away land, all for the low cost of 20$, and he takes Mastercard and Visa to pay for your boat ticket.

And you could buy it day one... Nope. I hate it worse

I think Two Worlds for 360 may have had this as well. I may be completely wrong though.

“On disc DLC” is a silly thing to be mad about. What difference does it make whether the files are on a disc you have access to but can’t decrypt, or a server you don’t have access to and still can’t decrypt? They’re inaccessible to you either way.

It depends I mean if its Muitiplayer and has no micro transactions or micro transactions that are fair and not greedy I am fine with it but sadly a lot of live service games basically filled the live service with pay to win micro transactions sadly.

It's really not in all honesty. If you buy a physical piece of software, you should have access to everything. Locking away content despite a piece of software being on a disc is just about as anti consumerist as something can get.

Perhaps, consider not feigning ignorance to one's criticisms on a certain matter. It doesn't bode well for you, and only makes you out to portray yourself as the fool.

Depends on the type of game doing it, some ended poorly but others are pulling strong. Every MMO is basically a live service. Also Sea of Thieves is a live service game that released poorly but eventually made up for it with updates.

I’m not feigning ignorance of the arguments. I’m aware of the arguments, I’m saying they’re silly arguments. Knowing you didn’t buy the DLC and expecting to get it anyway is not reasonable.

You bought the disc. You have it, you can put it in your drive and copy all the files off it. You can do whatever you want with those files; manipulate them to your heart’s content. You do have access to everything that’s on it. Go for your life.

If you want someone to come along and transform the files on your disc into other files that form an addon to a game though, well, that’s a service, and people are entitled to charge for their services.

Eh, Sea of Thieves is alright. it has a wealth of content, but there's still the risk of somebody cruising up and reaming your teeth in for no reason, ruining any and all progress you've made. I'd rather play against bots with various difficulty levels to choose from and reap the same rewards. PvP isn't for everybody and I believe that those that prefer PvE should have access to equivalent reward pools that PvP players have.

I understand why full PvE hasn't been implemented, that doesn't make Rare's choice on the matter okay. If anything, their choice on this matter is why the game has been on life support as far as active player counts go, here on PC.

I say all of this as somebody that's played SoT since day 1 of closed alpha... Truly, it could be better than where it is currently.

Depends...
Monster Hunter World is a good example of it being done well. The older ones too.

I can't really think of other games that do it extremely well.

If you can't play a game because of any other reason than you not owning the game and machine then it shouldn't exist! :P
