How To Install WIndows 10 on an SSD WITHOUT LOSING FILES
Hello,

I have been trying for the past week to figure out how to install WIndows 10 on a SSD and either I can't figure it out or it involves removing my files. I've tried the boot menu and installing media on a USB but nothing. I'm doing this to hopefully fix my performance on my PC as something is holding it back and after months of testing, this seems to be the only thing left to fix it.

Why not backup your files and do a clean install?

You should ask this on the Hardware/OS forum.

So what's on the drive already?

Do you mean you already have a copy of Win 10 installed, you want to move to SSD?
(you might need to uninstall a few things and get the size to match, but then clone the hard drive content across using an app tool, some SSD such as Samsung will even come with it)

Or do you have a previous version of Windows installed upon it?
(Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC - then under that ensure to use the option keep personal files - this will then work around your files while clean installing the OS)

Or is it just a SSD used for storage of other files, that you want Win 10 upon as well?
(You would either need to move the files off before installing or partition the drive so the OS is on a separated partition of free space, which it assumes is just another separated drive)

I just want to put Windows 10 on the SSD. I'm still using the hard drive but I want Windows 10 on the SSD in hopes it will fix my performance problems in games.

You need to spend more time in other parts of Internet such as Google and YouTube if you need fix for problems, pal'

My Hard drive is 4TB. My SSD is only 120GB. I'm only using this SSD just for Windows to see if it speeds up and fixes my performance. So if the video is talking about cloning everything to an SSD itself, then I can't do that.

Backup your data on the SSD to the HDD and disconnect it the HDD. Then install Windows 10 on the SSD (wipe all existing partitions). After that, you can connect the HDD.

But this probably won't help much with game performance except for load times.

Nothings on the SSD so were good there. Idk whats causing this at this point. Here's my benchmark if this helps with anything but no one not even my tech savy crazy friend even knows.

What brand is the SSD? Samsung?

Samsung has a clone tool called "Samsung Magician Software and Data Migration Software", you can find here: https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/

However, since your HDD is 4TB, it's going to be hard to clone across to the SSD (unless you can get the OS down to that size, uninstalling apps/games, etc). You might be better off with a clean installation of Windows 10.

In which case, do you have a Windows license key available? This could be Win 7 or Vista, or an actual Win 10 key for it's activation.

Under Start > Settings (the gear icon) > Update & Security > Activation. What edition is your original Windows 10 copy? Home or Pro? And how does it current suggest it's activated? Digital license or an actual Product key?

If you don't know your license key, then do you have a Microsoft Online Account linked to your Windows 10 copy? If not, I would suggest first creating one via the "Add a Microsoft Account". As this can be used to "reactivate" your fresh copy of Windows 10.

Your first step involves ensure you have an option for "Reactivation" of Windows.

Next do you have an empty 8GB or larger USB Thumb Drive available to use?

You would want to download and install the "Windows 10 Media Creation Tool" upon it and ensure it's bootable via USB (or you can use a writable DVD if you actually still have a disk drive for that).

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Then it depends on your motherboard brand, but there's a way to bring up your BIOS and/or Boot Manager when starting/rebooting the PC, in which you need the USB drive as #1 Boot Priority to launch the Windows installer from.

Its an SSD. I have a USB with Windows 10 Installation Media. I tried booting it through the boot menu order but it wouldn't let me install it on that SSD. It just said it already was installed even though I switched the Boot order.

Mine is similar specs but performing better: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/12545863

Your CPU and GPU seem to be under performing, relative to what I show on the benchmark.

Yeah but no one i've run into knows what could be the problem. I've done everything they have known to do and still nothing. OC Turbo mode you name it.

Update your BIOS.

Use an XMP profile for your RAM.

You have Turbo disabled? Is that because you're running a stock CPU cooler?

Yeah im not screwing around with OC. Not until I can afford a water cooling or advanced cooling system to support it. Tried XMP and BIOS too. Still nothing.

Does your SSD show up as a drive letter or under the disk manager?

Under the search, type "computer management" (without the quotes) and select from the list (or you can also find it under Control Panel > Administration Tools). Then look under Computer Management (Local) > Storage > Disk Management.

If the drive is correctly installed it should be on that list. Else shutdown the PC and check the cables (both sata power and sata data cables are connected). If the motherboard has G-SATA ports which you are plugged into, you will need to go to the offical motherboard website > support and install the drivers for those to be used, else use a different SATA port.

When the SSD shows up, is it unallocated space or already formatted with a drive letter?

If that's fine, then under your BIOS is it set as SATA Mode or AHCI Mode? UEFI boot mode or Legacy boot mode?

Backup your user files onto an external disk. Install Windows 10 on the SSD. Put your User files onto the new installation after installing Windows 10 on the SSD. Boom, you are done.

So what is the complaint? Which game and what issue?

I noticed in AC Unity compared to a video my fps was 45-60fps compared to the video which was 100fps+ with same hardware and slightly less powerful cpu.

The BIOS showing on the UserBench link is about 5 versions old.

How old is the version? if its more than 6 months then I guess it never reinstalled new ones.

The one you have is from 2015. There is a 2018 version and several before that on the AsRock site for your motherboard. Might help with performance a bit.

Ok ill take a look at updating it. Thank you so much for noticing that.

Disconnect HDD, plug SSD, install windows, plug HDD back, boot SSD, delete windows from HDD.

Done.
