Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Review

In case you feel like you're missing it by not being on Steam.

Running on a Ryzen 3600, and 6600 XT, 32GB of DDR4.
Brand new build for HTPC.

Launch the game. Wireless Xbox controller doesn't work.
Go through the setup with the keyboard just fine, select controller at the end. Keys change to buttons, but still doesn't work.
Exit game

Relaunch game.
Still not working.
Close game, close epic store, reconnect controller... still not working
Reset PC.

Relaunch game.
Controller works! Good.
Check the menu settings, HDR is enabled. Go to set the resolution to 4k just to see how it runs.
Every time you scroll through the resolution, the screen size changes, which is weird. Usually you just accept one, not preview them all in real time...
Oh well, HDR breaks while doing that and the screen goes very dark. Quit game.

Relaunch game.
4k working, HDR is working.
Star a new game, cut scenes look good, game runs OK, go through the tutorial. Get passed the intro and into Castle Cornelia. Running a bit choppy walking around, alt+tab to open MSI Afterburner and check the FPS. It's running about 50 fps, not bad, but not great.
Back into the menu to change the resolution... oh no wait, the controller layout is completely screwed up now. X and B are reverse, start is Left stick click. Wtf?
Quit game, open the Xbox app and verified the controller is ok.

Relaunch game.
Controller working fine.
Set resolution to 1440p, HDR breaks again.Quit game.

Relaunch game.
FPS is good now, walk around and talk to people in the castle. Leave the castle.
Cut scenes are now a black screen with voice overs. Wtf? Ah well, skip the cut scenes for now.
Opens a map I can pick from. Pick the first area, it's a repeat of the tutorial. Exit that, start the second option, Chaos Temple.
Cut scene works this time, that's good. Walk up and open the door.
Crash to desktop.

$80? That's enough of this.

Open up a web browser, search "Requesting a refund on Epic Games", submit refund request. Get money back.

Buy Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Runs flawless at 4k, controller works great.

I find they have bugs and quarks from being ported, but they're playable. SoP wasn't playable. Changing settings was breaking the HDR, movies weren't playing, and it crashed.

The port of FF3 DS is still broken i think it randomly crash i heard there was problems with Final Fantasy Type-0 too and I have attempted to play FFX recently but i get random crashs now and i tried to fix these, i had purchased this game a while back but it used to play on my old PC.

I mean sure but having a record of poor optimisation like that or doing whatever they did with the original Steam release of Final Fantasy 8 which is really a bad port, the OST was on MIDI and graphics were weird especially on the world map.

Of course, they never needed excuses. Buying at launch and expecting a working game is literally Daffy Duck levels of silly.

Is it? The vast majority of games I've bought on release have worked fine, minus the odd bug or two.
FF XIII and FFXV ran fine, bought it on release.

And yet, here we are.

FF 8 on PC came out in 2000, the Steam version is a slightly updated version. Same logic applies, it's not broken because it was released broken, it's broken because it hasn't been well maintained in the face of modern systems.
