This -> "it's a 50/50% for me too... Heath Ledger / Cesar Romero"
Though, I may place Ledger's performance as a more suitable contemporary interpretation. Just a slight bit. For dramatic performance overall, his is unquestionably the most engaging. Romero's is, however... Classic. It is suitably over-the-top for its era, too.
Mark Hammill - I haven't watched the cartoon. I have heard his interpretation and do agree it's great. But, that's a voice-actor speaking through a cartoon and it can't be directly compared to live-action performances. I think we all know Hammill is a great actor and does a fine job, so I would have no doubt he'd make a good live-action Joker. But, that's not what he's bringing to bear in a cartoon. (Voice-actors are often the unsung heroes of "acting." I love good voice-actors and they should be more appreciated. It's just a slight case of apples and oranges, here.)
Nicholson's performance was electric... He was a screen-stealer. That's what he does, because... he's Jack Flobartin' Nicholson. :) I think his performance was perfect for that movie and his role in it, though I disliked the background setup quite a bit. I would have rather it was left a mystery, but then the plot wouldn't happen, so... /shrug.
Leto - Was garbage. His method... Well, I think he just went off the deep end. Nobody is quite in agreement, AFAIK, regarding how much film was thrown away in editing. Some say forty-five minutes, some say hours worth. All due to Leto's performance/issues/unprofessional actions. (AFAIK and IMO) His unprofessional behavior as an actor, not just his interpretation and performance, was a very worrisome thing, potentially effecting the entire production and the performance of his fellow actors at their literal jobs. There is no excuse for that in any professional setting. None. Someone, somewhere, in that production did need to act to correct that, though, and I don't know that was done. If it was, then the only reason they didn't fire him was that he had a following eager to see him in that role... unfortunately.
(He was a "headliner." "The Joker" is an eyecatcher. Even with the intro of Harley, which people were looking forward too, Leto was still a huge draw. And, he got what, a few minutes of screen-time and some disconnected, nonsensical, scenes in the final release amidst all the footage that was cut? Yeah... problems.)
True...
The way most actors in the Batman Animated ( or video game ) soundtrack is usually the actors just sitting there doing their lines... I hear that Mark seldom if ever sits and is so animated that sometimes the animation team gets video of him for references..
Also... as someone who grew up on radio... sometimes the voice can make or break a animation or video game... if you haven't watched the "cartoons" you should... they're pretty great.
Nicholson... dose a great job at being Nicholson. I thought he was great in the movies he did... but seeing him as the Joker just made me think... well... there's Jack Nicholson.

I have to say... for 1,000s other actors / actresses that got typecast and faded into obscurity I take my hat off to Mark for re-inventing himself and doing such a AWESOME job at it... too cool.
he also didn't mention Cameron Monaghan that played "joker" in Gotham but I understand why cause Gotham's Joker isn't affiliated with the actual Joker
There are people out there that could be great for the character that exists in a really well made form, such as Hamills Joker. The issue with hollywood is they like to look inward, rather than find the right talent for the right part.
I have seen some footage of him doing his voice-over and he really gets into it. It's actually wonderful to see someone pour that much into their voice-acting role. Other good voice actors do that as well, of course. But, he did display a certain level of professional intensity in the clips I've seen. Facial expressions, tensed upper body, hand movements that would amplify his performance if it was live, etc.. Really good stuff. 10/10 Pro.
I 100% agree. I've watched plenty of dramatic animations/cartoons and I do enjoy the ones that are done well. It's just that it's sort of a different medium and I can't demand that actors be held up to each other across mediums that don't incorporate their types of performances. The only Joker-Like Role I've seen Hammill in was in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" :) And, that was obviously some contrived satire and plenty of wall-breaking was going on.
That's one of my own sentiments - I am always very happy to see an actor, or anyone, successfully reinvent themselves or reinvigorate their own pursuit in a profession. Hammill certainly navigated his way into further stardom and gained even more fans with his voice-over work. He's successfully kept himself at the edge of the public-eye, too.
PS: Lol'd at "well... there's Jack Nicholson." Very true. He did get to go a bit over-the-top, too, though. It looked like he was enjoying his freedom. Then again, who's going to over-direct Jack Nicholson if they've hired Jack Nicholson?
I mean, you can go with he was a crappy comedian who was set up as the Red Hood. One of my fave portrayals is from The Batman as the last hero.
