What happened to arena shooters!?
So I've been an absolute hardcore fan of quake and unreal tournament. Absolutely love FPS arena games.

But looking around right now it seems the genre is close to death.

Quake champions has a dying playerbase and was a mediocre game at best while UT4 I believe was cancelled by epic ( citation needed ).

It saddens me greatly. I miss the days of jumping into matches grabbing a rocket launcher or a railgun and go fragging.

Did people lose interest in arena FPS games?

Interest in arena shooters has declined massively and deathmatch shooters are also suffering from saturation as people's tastes change. There's a few arena-type shooters here and there but none with a significant playerbase.
Not at all. I am still here, am I not? And I still play those. I still have Half-Life 2: Deathmatch installed, for example, and Half-Life. This probably means I hope to continue playing those games, otherwise I would not kept them installed.

Splitgate is a pretty good modern alternative, playerbase seems pretty good as well

Cheaters. Same thing thats happened to all fps games.

That and predatory loot boxes/micro transactions.
Because those games require something that modern CoD/ Halo kiddies gamers lack:
Skill.
I've seen many a COD KID loose at Unreal Tournament and games alike cause they couldn't get in the swing of how Unreal Tournament functioned, Not many people play these games, but I reckon if you could drum up enough interest, it could revive the genre

I don't think they lost interest in them, I just think that the FPS genre evolved away from them because of problems like Spawn Killing and Matchmaking Challenges, both of which were earlier FPS problems, and ironically both of which still exist today.

Hero Shooters and Payload types evolved out of that as a sort of way to resolve that but, ignoring the problem by replacing it, does not in fact actually fix the problem. And THAT, is why so many hero shooter games are communally so divided and have the exact same problems that arena shooters did back in the day.

The solution devs came up with was a Square Peg, but the problem is a Round Hole.
Wrong solution, for the wrong problem.
