So why did Will Smith punch Chris Rock?
Something about G.I. Jane... I don't get it.

He made a GI Jane Joke about Jada because she's bald. I think she has alopecia so that was kinda tasteless but still Will overreacted.

I am aware of that much. But it still seems excessive to think this was a malicious and completely over the top action.

It has to be scripted.

Of course it was staged. Just like Ricky Gervais shocking the viewers. It generates buzz. And Smith slaps him. Easy to pull up short of injury. Anyone as "pissed" as he was supposed to be would have knocked Chris's block off.

Seriously?... it's Will Smith... not Gervonta Davis.

You do know Will Smith is an ACTOR not really his characters right? Jada could hit harder then Will could... :steammocking:
You do know the difference between a punch and a slap right? I mean, that wasn't even a serious slap. And of course he is an actor. When did I say he wasn't?

Pretty sure I said pretty clearly that he was acting. So was Chris. Hence the "it being fake/staged"

If it had been real, he would have be escorted out. The Oscars have done it before. But they knew it was coming. Yeash. Will isn't that big an actor anymore, to get away with it.

This thread and countless news sites prove just how effective the stunt was.

Very well said.
I mean, it doesn't matter how famous you are, you can't go around smacking people without punishment.
So, it's very obviously fake.

Like it just makes no sense for it to be anything else.

When thinking about comedy in whole, in my opinion, any matter can be dealt, showed, told or pointed out in it when the matter itself is the target. But if the point of the comedy is to mock or insult and offend someone, that is not so acceptable excluding roasting, in where the target accepts being the target for any jest or mocking. It is a different thing when building a funny handicapped person for a joke than joke about someone because he is handicapped.

I agree completely, as well.

I'll also add that there is a different sort of performance that is expected from hosting an event to performing at an event. There is some crossover, but something like an event dedicated to the performance of a comedian is very different than that comedian acting as a host - Everyone isn't there to watch their comedy routine.

I don't know that well Chris Rock's way to perform or entertain people in US in different events or shows, but I think that he did not think careful enough the situation and the event in where he was performing now. Even though the comedians are allowed to have more room to jest and entertain the audience, more discretion would have been better. And yes, apologizing right after it would have been in order.

Agreed. For the brief time I watched the vids, Rock's joke seemed to not quite be in the "regular banter" sort of form, maybe spontaneous or maybe something he knew was a bit edgy to begin with.

And how about Will's reaction? No. Understandable in a way, but absolutely way out of line. What if Will would have just looked Chris and told that "Not cool, bro. That was really hurtful. Then Chris Rock would have been the complete and utter fool of the event. Now with the slap, Will gave an example, especially to the youth, that violence is a acceptable way. That is a shame and he should apologize it.

Agreed, as well.

I think "The Oscars" needs to take a look at itself. I don't have any craps to give about it - I don't watch it and don't care what they have to say about anything at all, ever. But, if they want it to be somehow valuable or relevant... Well, it's not going to get that way by itself.

The only use it has is to promote movies, distribution rights, some "golden child" careers, and grandstanding for "social commentary" that few there actually give a crap about, but all want to be $een $upporting. To be fair, too - A bunch of pop-actors are not particularly intelligent or well-versed people. Some few are or some few do try to correct that, but most of them live in celebrity fishbowls.
He should have been escorted out of the building because he literally assaulted someone.
He's lucky the host wasn't Ricky Gervais or the next 2 hours of the show would have been a Will Smith roast.
Actually that sounds more fun than the Oscars.

Once again, it's very obvious it was staged and no one can claim otherwise.
I don't get it.

Why are people ignoring all the evidence?
Heck, the fact he wasn't escorted out was the most blatant proof it was fake!

OOOF.

To quote Matt Walsh: "Will Smith will not tolerate other men making jokes about his wife. He will however tolerate other men having sex with his wife. This is a man of principle."
Dammit dude, wanted to make a joke about why he's supposed to keep her name out of his mouth while others can put "some other things" inside his wife. :P
So, since I'm not exactly up on celebrity gossip, why are people making these jokes about Will Smith letting other people have sex with his wife?

I mean, I will not judge open marriages, but that seems weird.
Attention.

Supposedly, while they were separated for a time, she had an affair and it was claimed or verified that it was with Will's acknowledgement/permission/whatever.

It's not a big deal... I know people may not understand that, but they were separated by mutual agreement. As in "this might be over, but we don't really know yet" kind of separation. In may States in the US, a formal Separation is very nearly like a divorce and, for instance, "infidelity" is disregarded at that point. (I don't know if they were formally Separated, but it really doesn't matter at that point.)

But, children who do not understand what that situation means or what a relationship or marriage might be will then jump in with their newly discovered word - cuckhold. Because, they're smart like that, no matter if they've read Chaucer or not...

Ah. Okay. I see. Thank you for explaining.

I totally understand during a separation for that to be done.
It's like when you get surgery on your side, and for awhile after it, you can't really laugh because it really hurts.
That would do it as well. Yeah.
The human body doesn't like surprise blows to the side of the torso for certain.
That's how Houdini died.

If it had been a "none famous" guy doing that on the street "for the same reasons" he would be in jail for 15 years by now.

America. Land of the free rich

You're aware this was obviously all staged, right?
So, the comparison doesn't work at all.
