Short on the side and mid to long on the top tends to work well for most boys.
You want razor sharp edges around the ears and sides, this is the signs of a professional high-quality haircut. It makes all the difference between looking messy or tidy and clean.
The top however doesn't need to be as clean. Some can get away with wild natural flowing hair, if going for a skater or surfer's beach hair appearance.
Without any hair product, you should see how your hair naturally flows and work with that. A quality haircut should flow naturally. Then add the product to just comment it.
It's his loss anyways, he hasn't seen Jason Momoa.
Maybe his parents just want to look out for him and want the best for him because they know how the real world operates.
In the real world there is lot of discrimination, we not talking racism but other types of discrimination that are un-talked about such as hair discrimination, tattoo discrimination, accent discrimination etc... all this happens in job interviews, when trying too rent a place to live, when meeting people for the first time.
It's sad that people base judgement solely on how you dress, if you got tattoos, if you have bad teeth, if you are ugly, even were you live. It does happen all the time and will continue to happen and sadly some people will be held back due to the way they are, dress or how they present oneself. I been victim to this and its not nice.
I see your point, but it would be preferrable to fight against others thinking this way instead of giving in into their demands. The discrimination will never disappear completely but will at least be lessened. Semirelated thing to bring up is black people had to deal with their natural hair being considered unprofessional and are now fighting back.
Im sorry you experienced this. admittedly I can't say much about it because I'm still really young.
Actor in movies including but not limited to Aquaman, Batman vs. Superman

It's kinda interesting...
Easy to control and clean.
Long hair is hard to maintain but the end results pay off. Same with beards.
Shaving and trimming everything up super short is easy but you end up looking like a thumb or stick figure.
