Playstation Blu Ray Mod
Just picked up a PS2 at the thrift shop for cheap. Score! I know it only plays DVDs but has anyone tried to hard mod the thing to play Blu Rays? Happy Sunday! :steamhappy:

You can try using any Sony blu-ray player and combine it with the PS2 in the dryer. When it comes out it should have the ability modded in and you won't see the blu-ray player anymore. I saw someone do something like this with a PS2>PS3.

Getting the software to be compatible is the harder part.

Yeah..... good luck with that, hope youre well versed in reversin, your gonna need it to get the ancient ps2 tech to even recognize a modern blu-ray drive(ps2 doesn't even use the same connector types, obviously)

Home theater Blu-Ray players and PC BD-ROMs have gotten cheap lately, why bother? Just get an actual BD player.

Would be cheaper, and MUCH EASIER
Good answers guys. I just thought it would be a fun project to make it into a little sleeper but it doesn't sound worth it. Cheers!

Not possible, for the following reasons:

1. Hardware ID. The BIOS is hard coded to know certain Hardware ID's.
2. Connectors. The PS2 uses proprietary connectors.
3. Power supply. The power supply is not powerful enough to handle a Blue Ray drive. There aren't any power supplies better than what is already available for the console.

So, I'm sorry to say, wishful thinking.

That is all...

It’s unnecessary and inconvenient as is there is lot of blu-ray players laying around at shops, including PS3, PS4 and Xbox One you could use instead.
I wouldn’t operate on PS2 without technical knowledge.

Now why didn't I think of that. You must be some sort of engineer for spacex. I did it and it worked! You are a life saver

Or you can just get a first gen PS3.

Though if you are to do so for the love of god give it some maintenance. The first genners are the most prone to overheating because of the EmotionEngine chip.

The later models without the chip can still play PS2 games albeit via software and with mixed results. I can play Midnight Club 3 and Medal of Honor Frontline so it's good enough for me.
