Google spying on Steam private chats?
Hi. Earlier today I was having a private conversation with a friend on steam. We were talking about cats and I suggested to give theirs some tuna. I never talk about cats eating tunas on the internet. I looked for the translation of tuna in a website called wordreference. Didn't look for cat vids today. Didn't talk about cats anywhere but in that private conversation this week, or even this month. My settings on firefox are strict, when I close all windows, which I do at least every hour, my passwords, historic, cookies are cleared. So several hours later I just went on youtube and they suggested me this video : . It's not even new or popular, or a channel I know. Is it a huge coincidence?

Cat videos are always suggested as they are cute.

What YT suggests is generally popular and new videos from popular channels... unless we asked for something specific and then they suggest associated videos. This cat-eating-tuna suggestion is way too specific to be the usual random suggestion based on my activity on google or youtube. That's why I bother to ask here.

You typed tuna into wordreference. Clearing your cookies/temp files does not prevent their third party advertising from using stuff that was typed in their site to advertise to you later. Or maybe it was random, who knows. It probably wasn't chat...

I type many words in wordreference and I don't see them coming in my google/YT suggestions, I don't know, maybe you're right, but I'm dubious. I'll experiment and see how one can influence yt from wordreference and/or steam. Hoping for a 0%..

Have a look at wordreferences privacy policy - it says they do that...

From what they said, I should have blocked all their cookies. But I'll test them.

No. It's a small coincidence. Given the number of things people talk about and google for, this happens quite regularly. Especially since our brain likes to see patterns even when there are none.

Of courst google is spying. What did you expect a sophisticated SPAM company would do when it has the ability?

You can view your entire chatlogs in support settings, but I think Valve has encryption. Tuna through the websearch could easily have done the vid suggestion alone. Tuna and cats go paw in paw. :DietCatPaw:

Only 2 weeks worth.

Good to know, thanks for the input.
Just make sure you're targeting not just first-party cookies, but also third-party cookies and also DOM storage.
