Well that's the thing... Anime in Japan is big... it's for all ages... in all types of genres, and has been for generations....
In the "west" it's for kids... and kid friendly genres.. it never got big over here like over there so there's not a lot of it... at least, not anymore.... Warner Brothers Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies and the like in other companies were big and for all ages ( some of those jokes aren't kid friendly lulz ) but that faded out and became more kid friendly over the years....
There also use to be more adult themed movies in animated style, like Heavy Metal, Wizards, Fire & Ice, Heavy Traffic... ect.... the last ones like Cool World.. just never took off over here.
Not that there isn't people trying to make them... it's just there's no backing from big companies in movies and T.V. that are interested in them because the risk is too great for failing because it's just too little of an interest in them in the "western" style...
Though to be fair there is a dearth of western animation that is serious drama.
Morel Orel.
That's the most depressing ♥♥♥♥ I've ever seen.
Wish I could say Netflix's Watership Down remake but it sucked. Read the book.
Mostly?... lol
So 4... let's throw Futurama, Simpsons ( kinda-sorta ) , anything on Adult Swim... and one or five more... 20? "adult-ish" shows compared to the hundreds if not thousands of animation aimed at kids.... where as Anime is about 50/50 adult/kid since the late 50's where people now adult grew up with Anime...
Before the Simpsons in 1987... what was there? not much, and the Simpsons pretty much started the whole Family Guy, South Park thing.... not Anime.
As for Western Animation that DOES imitate the whole Anime Style, you have Avatar : TLA / LOK, and Rooster Teeth's RWBY and GEN:LOCK shows. Those are the 4 that I'm aware of anyways. Although Avatar TLA / LOK was marketed at kids and teenagers respectively, whereas RWBY is marketed at both kids and adults, GEN:LOCK is marketed for probably teenagers and young adults, as it incorporates slight usage of cursing, whereas RWBY hardly ever uses language like that.
So basically, Western Animation for adults exist, but Western Anime for Adults doesn't.
i know how picky the mods get on this topic so if i get banned for a week don't be suprised
Now for some more "adult anime"
Afro Samurai comes to mind,Damn good anime-movie too
Jin-Roh, A lot more darker What-if secenario in histroy but it's a good watch
Thoese two are older but gold i can't think of anymore at the molment.
But each of those shows has how many episodes?
Yeah there were adult animated shows before then, but they weren't distributed through the TV networks. Hell, I don't even know if Fritz the Cat would be allowed on YouTube uncensored. Too busy to check.
Yeah.. but how many of Anime shows have how many episodes...
Simpsons = 662 episodes...
One Piece = 894 episodes... probably the most recognized show in the west to compare it to
Sazae-san = 7,542+ episodes... Started broadcasting on October 5, 1969
Nintama Rantarō = 2,113 episodes...
Oyako Club = 1,818 episodes...
And the list goes on and on.... like I said.. there's really no comparison in the west
Well yes... but that's because most western animations are comedies and there are "slice of life anime" that are more like sitcoms or soap operas... with comedy and serious themes running through them.... agreed.
Most of Simpsons episodes are self-sufficient, while in One Piece stretches every non-bonus arc for 5-10 episodes you cant cut from each other without ruining everything.
