Most anime is the same art style with usually the same stereotypical characters + storylines.
Nowadays the difference is Anime, at least tries to innovate sometimes and hasn't been intervened by SJW's type of crap, yet. Taking into account that, Anime is seeing "in general" more appealing sales numbers & amount of public gathered around it.
However Bollywood & Wakaliwood, might take over given a few years of trial & error.
The quality of many anime at least in my opinion dropped really badly too and I don't know why but less people get tired of them and they still have a big audience.
I agree on the decline of quality overall [films, videogames, many things]; common factor is greed, formulas and complacency; being made painfully obvious in Hollywood in recent years IMO, for now other producers like the anime studios seem to put more actual effort and thought into convincing me to spend money on them by being more entertaining in the entertainment industry. Money was always the goal, but some actually put in the effort to earn it.
Where Anime is rolling down a hill by having mostly similar themes with a few standout titles, Hollywood is plunging off a cliff then going back up to fall off again in a remake.
Good titles would always rise to the top while the forgettable ones will be forgotten, it was always the case and thats one reason why we think older films were better; but I will say I am hard pressed to find any gems in recent years from personal experience or personal recommendation ['professional reviewers' are mostly fanciful paid advertisers].
Seems like if greed were a factor in this, they'd be making stuff that makes lots of money. Aside from the rare Pixar movie, seems like they've all said, "We don't care if it loses money, we're making it anyway!!!"
I stopped watching Hollywood movies as they felt the same aswell. It was a good first couple of movies but in the end they just make the same thing over and over again. I've watched 2 superhero movies and then I didn't want to watch one more.
I believe, in my case, that there is just to much stuff happening to quickly. I loved the poker playing scenes in the old Star Trek series, just watching people do something normal and talk about stuff. And don't get me started on almost every single cartoon, they are pure adrenaline. :P
But to finally give an answer, I think, do you really not think this might just be a outlier? I mean, you only mention one movie so maybe it's just a one time thing and the next time we're all back to ye ol' ways? Heh. Also I wonder what "thing" that has been going on over the years that might have done something why the Oscars aren't visited as much? ;)
Seems like an extreme reaction to me, but to be fair, I wouldn't be sad if it was true!
Even US sports, music, and just about all other US forms of entertainment has been effected by the same problems that Hollywood has shown for the past 10+ years. Thus a good chunk of the people in the US have moved on to explore the options available from other countries. Thus the demand created for not only anime & manga, but just about any other imported form of entertainment.
I'm no expert, and I don't know if it qualifies as "anime", per se, but I think if you watched the Studio Ghibli films, you'd change your mind. Absolutely incredible stuff.
