Who is your favourite philosopher?
Assuming that you have one.

If we are only allowed people we've met irl, then myself would have to be my fav. Or one of my marketing teachers.

She taught me that life will hurt you, and hurt you, and hurt you, until you can't hurt no more. And then you die. Which will also hurt.

So its best to like being hurt, because its always going to come like the rain.

One Google search is all it took to confirm that Socrates was real.
Socrates left no work of his own. Everything we know about Socrates came through Plato.

You do not have to have known them in real life.

Socrates still left no work of their own. Scholars claim that Socrates was an actual human because Plato claims he was. That's all the facts to go on. Therefore, it is arguable that Socrates was completely fictional.

But my original point was about differentiating between the 'philosopher' and the 'philosophy.' That is an important distinction that few people chose to take on this thread.

I do not care if it is arguable. I am counting him, and I asked my question as I meant to.

You don't think that it is important to distinguish between a 'philosophy' and a 'philosopher?'

Does it really matter if he was real? Since none of them are real anymore.

It doesn't matter, but I thought it was an interesting point to make given that many people on this thread chose a long dead philosopher, whom they never met, as their favorite. I just thought it was amusing.

Why does this thread feel like "someone name some obscure and unheard of philosopher"

I don't understand what's so hard to understand about my question.
Mayhap someone's favourite philosopher is Nietzsche but their favourite philosophy isn't nihilism. They answer the question with "Niezstche".
I am treating Socrates as a real person and thus as a real philosopher. I don't see what's so hard to grasp about this.

And what makes you think that distinction was not being made?

Because no one here has actually met Nietzsche.

Well, if you see it that way doesn't your question get confused with the question "Post the name of a philosopher." How do you know they are posting their favorite?

I wonder how much less amusing it would be if they chose a living philosopher whom they have also never met.

What about Plato?

Do there exist any actual manuscripts of his work, in his hand?

That's why I made the suggestion that the thread question would be better written as "What is your favorite philosophy."
