So well, I didn't expected DNA modification tools get this advanced this early in the century. So What do you guys think? Planet of Apes or some funky new lethal diseases might come around and bite us in the ass later on? Or a more optimistic point of view?

I think it was a reference to an anime where an Alchemist creates human chimeras by fusing a human with an animal. First he uses his wife, then later he uses his own daughter.

As for the topic... IMO, experimentation such as this is necessary if "we" as a collective species wish to fast track evolution and modify ourselves beyond the bounds of natural limitations. Creating enhanced humans to be smarter, faster, stronger, more durable, etc. If you've taken a few Biology course, you'll see just how scary the human body is and the untapped potential it has.

There is a lot of good that can come from this, just as there is a lot of evil that can come from it. IMO, it's akin to Atomic research; it led to weapons capable of eradicating all known life but it also led to one of the cleanest, safest, and most efficient form of energy. (Nuclear power plants. Seriously, research them.)

In regards to "Rights" of "Human animal hybrids"... IMO, it depends on their intelligence capable and expected life span. If they are as intelligent as a human but only have a lifespan of ~20 years and mature as quickly as a dog or cat, then I'd say they should be classified and treated as a pet such as dogs/cats. But if their lifespan is ~40+ then they should have the rights akin to a human.

No matter how you manipulate the genes here, you're never going to have a race of Centaurs. :P

Like maybe, just maybe you could get a human with extra hair on them, because that's already a thing, but you're never going to get Lizard people who can slap you with their tongue 8 feet away.
You'll never have Ganesh from Hindu Mythology show up. :P

Indeed we shouldn't see one of those mythological creatures anytime soon. However the new tech have brought up some ethical & moral dilemmas, that eventually might need a serious discussion about what to do about these new living beings made in-lab.

That's a good point, my guess is that time will tell. So far this century looks more interesting history & geopolitical wise than the 1900's so far, imho of course.

The Aliens you saw after 1947 Roswell accident were Ancient Humans who changed and modified their body with Genome Projects. After thousands of years, their body changed into current ugly weird things.

This project is not the first one done in human history. Most of the history of our ancestors are either lost or kept hidden.

It might be one of the most "sensitive" discussion topics in a few years in the future if those new hybrids go out of the lab be it normally or if they escape somehow.

They already did [have hope] but they're ignoring a lot of nuances that are the difference between this & that.

Of course, I'm sure (inb4 "prove it") it's still probably possible but it's not as simple as smashing a cat & a human together & getting only the addition of the ears & tail & nothing else.
Plus, ethical issues again...

Perhaps, however i don't think it will be the "romanticized" / "fluffy" / "soft" version portrayed in various entertainment media of the "catgirls". But rather a more savage, crude and visceral maybe even blood thristy predator version of those beings.

That's what I expect to be the most "soft" hybrid or attempt of a fully developed "catgirl". Messing around with DNA might still lead to a Black Swan event.

Okay honestly, as someone who looks a lot at the bad in society, and is misanthropic for that reason, even I agree that society has some semblance of ethical guidance.
