Dragonstomper = rpg
The two original Wolfensteins were Rogue-like/Stealth games.
And on that topic, the Rogue-like genre was probably started by Rogue. But maybe not. Mainframe text adventures were evolving and starting to get graphics by way of ASCII characters, and there were plenty of amateur projects at the time.
After the smash hits of Wolfenstein 3d and Doom and their isometric sprites, work began on true 3D polygon-based graphics. Quake was not actually the first. The mind-bending, motion sickness-causing Descent 1 and Sega's Virtua Fighter and the RPG King's Field came out before Quake, but Quake set the bar for it's smooth, stable framerate and detailed environments.
Nope. Ultima Underworld and System Shock did it long before, even if they weren't strictly shooters. And, of course, Jurassic Park Trespasser told a full, detailed ingame story, even if the engine wasn't totally complete.
Actually, no. The Zergling is merely a look-a-like of the Tyranid Hormagaunt, much like the Zerg are Blizzard's spin on the Tyranids.
On topic: 1) Westwood made the RTS genre popular with Dune 2000 and Command & Conquer.
2) Street Fighter II is the game where Capcom accidentally invented the combos for fighting games.
Actually yes. I said zerging, not Zergling.
Ah, you meant the Zerg Rush and/or zerg associated swamping. My bad~!
