The Game Boy was actually a bit crappier than the competition - Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear offered full colour graphics and better capabilites.

However, Game Boy drained much less battery power, was more compact, cheaper and had a ton of games, with top selling exclusives like Super Mario Land, Tetris (ok not exclusive but GB version was the "go to" one) and Pokemon.

Also, the green screen was somewhat retro and reminded on 80s PC monitors, although the lack of a back lit screen was somewhat of an issue but also spawned various odd 3rd party accessories

Game Boy Colour fixed the "no colours" issue, then Game Boy Advance somewhat improved the graphics.

GBA SP is the best version of the classic Game Boy and still worth owning as it runs all GB series games and has a back lit screen

GameBoy Advance in 2001

GameBoy must first turn into GameMan before GameMan Advance can appear

You have to get wire or pipe-cleaners or something, then either drill & solder. or glue on some arms & legs.

Then you draw a mustache somewhere on it, ideally Mario, Luigi, Wario, or Waluigi - and there you go... now you've got your GameMan.

...oh, also, you're going to need to use something to erase or paint over the "BOY" text & replace it with "MAN".
