Why microwave has popcorn button

You still have to listen to the popcorn popping, and not just run it till it's done. The button just gives you a timeframe.

And I hate that. I'm the kind of guy who'll spend five minutes contemplating the difference between a pinch and a dash. When I pop popcorn, it's like OKAY STOP IT NOW no wait there's a series of pops BUT NOW no popping again...wait...wait...NO NOT YET!

Just FYI everyone. Costco popcorn on a 1000 watt microwave at full power is perfect at exactly 3 minutes.

There is no way the microwave popcorn accounts for all brands of popcorn bags.

Nail on the head, right there. It's a luxury function for a luxury good. It's not a one size fits all solution either.

More Microwave Popcorn Button Info: So my three level button corresponds with how many ounces of popcorn are in the bag. Level 1 is 1.75 oz, the other two are bigger I guess.
As my JTHP 100s bags are only 1.25 oz, I had to stop the timer early to avoid burning.

Moar Microwave Info: I think the reason the popcorn button exists has to do with the earliest commercial microwaves. Some of the first were set up in company lunch rooms. Instead of a timer they had six buttons, corresponding to food items you could by from a vending machine.
The popcorn, sandwiches, etc. were all the same size, and each had a corresponding button.
When the manufacturers started making them for home use, they carried over the buttons.
Which only heat the correct amount of time if you use the right size popcorn bag etc.
