Only other game I tried with trans protagonist was Tell Me Why, and holy hell it was bad. Couldn't even get ironic entertainment out of it like I did with Life Is Strange, it was just BAD.
If they don't use it as a selling point and it gets told during the game that they're transgender then I'm fine with it since that doesn't feel like they're pandering to a certain audience to me.
Looking at Comics and TV shows as an example to answer this question; when it becomes strictly about this rather than making a good character / show / game etc; the entire product tends to be terrible. This would also make it political / social-political at the core of "look what our character is, it's so progressive!" again, rather than focusing on being a good game. We all know the dialogue would also severely suffer and be made political, which is not something people really want in a video game.
Everyone I know doesn't care if they play as a male or female, because the characters have meaning, the games are good, the character has progression/storyline that makes sense usually through multiple titles. In the 90s boys were even playing as Xena, the Deception series had a female main character, Tomb raider is an obvious one as well.
