They're an established market in gaming. That makes them successful.
But, the free games each xmas does make a lot of people happy. I would have caved, but no forums was a dealbreaker for me getting it. On top of the other stuff.
I think at this point they're a bit like WoW. If you ask anyone, including "hardcore fans", it's a "dying or dead game" (and has been for 12 years now); while still comfortably dominating the market.
Ofc, Epic is not "dominating the market", but they're definitely standing in spite of all the things that would have, according to the community "Killed Epic forever".
I also hate them because I had a privacy issue with them a few years ago.
Edit: I am sure if they got rid of the free/paid giveaways at least 50% of their web traffic would go away.
Fortnite has 350M players cross platform while steam has 24M.
Epic is much bigger but steam has more PC game variety. Not sure of the income, but CSGO skins are expensive, just 1 rare skin alone can cost over $2k and there are thousands of them.
In terms of history, Epic is older as well. They have tyrian and one must fall in DOS before counter-strike.
Currently, Epic is building their future by giving latest games at huge discounts. Steam is giving us awards everyday (Automatic system where we buy games -> come and go awards). Maybe it's to make us feel loved and wanting to stay.

Yeah, that's the case for any business, ever. Your point?
