As for me, I ain't about it, but I guess someone out there uses it.
The only time I use it is when I have a controller connected, but that's rare.
not big picture but the steam input compatibility layer that was made for it is useful since it's allow games to detect Direct Input gamepads while playing game meant for Xinput.

After snagging one of the last remaining Steam Controllers, I played around with it.

Very unintuitive and user-unfriendly, I must say. But then, most media center hub frontends are. A consequence of community colleges treating "UX" like an actual field.

Big Picture isn't nearly as big a pain in the ass as Kodi and Roku.

I mean, scrolling up and down by circling the touch pad by default was ridiculous when ipods were new and is ridiculous now.

I use controller a lot on steam. Hardly use big picture mode. I got console UI on the consoles. They are kind of blocky, big and basic looking like big picture mode.

I tried to. It's nice but annoying at once.
On occassion. In the few instances I use a controller, I find that some games tend to..... misbehave if I don't launch it from Big Picture mode.

And I mean I can't complain. It does it's job, and in the instances where I hook up my PC to a TV screen and lie on a couch or bed, Big Picture mode saves me the hassle of getting up from my bed to launch a game.

Yes; when I connect my PC to the television.

I think If we are using PC we don't need big picture mode.

However it's good for Valve. It means giving console players a choice to switch between PS controller with steam controller. It is a little door to penetrate the console market.

I only open it by accident & then quickly close it.

I don't use it, I did try it years ago but sticked with the default.

That sounds like the intended use of it, if you ask me.
