Do you think age ratings are effective at all?
Relative to your countries age regulation board, of course.
In Europe, for videogames we have a board called PEGI who's absurdly inconsistent and strict. Like, Spider-Man is rated 16.

I think it's a marketing gimmick to appeal to people who believe in age-appropriate content.

Taking movie ratings as a parallel, there used to be movies meant for just about anyone and 'X-rated' movies, meaning they were for adults.

A very small percentage of x-rated movies were erotic in nature, and generally speaking the rating was conceived of in order to scare people away from controversial subject matter like gay romances or political critiques.

At this point its a convenient way to tell if a cutesy-looking game is going to turn out to be Conker's Bad Fur Day, and that's about it.

I dont think that many people care about pegi here, unless you are a parents and want a recomendation from store clerc.

I mean for me its just a recomendation and not every one might want drugs or say f word in every centens i guess?

As for op answer a bitt for those who dont play games.

Only if the parents care. If the parents don't care, age rating don't do anything.

Age ratings don't work and they negatively effect games/movies that could and should be more violent

Depends on who's monitoring and implementing it.

If it's implemented well they shouldn't be have access to such a thing that's above their age but if their parents are monitoring then often the case is that it just slowly grows opposite to becoming an overwhelming and addictive issue so.

Age ratings are there for a reason but to tell you the 'honest' or here maybe subjective truth, beyond.

That which is censored there isn't really much wider world out there to ponder your head about.

There are a few things and that's about it, the 'struggle' in your life shall be in your head mostly.

It's about finding a way to cope with it and to make it work like active, your brain then.

This way you can exit the shell that is keeping you confined to one particular thought or line.

Line of thought or logic or ideology when you are free from this, you can 'freestyle' and vibe to other 'winds' as in.... directions.

The world is not stationary even though it looks that way, the world is super dynamic just like chemistry and effects thereof seen heard and present, everywhere.

In essence it's about micro-biology and managing it well.

As flawed as today's rating system is, I feel like it still beats the old system where there was no ratings, but inappropriate or risque scenes were straight up censored from the film.

I think using ratings to force people to censor themselves is worse.

Never cared, i played various games way above the age restrictions when i was a kid, it never stopped me, but for games like GTA i just never had an interest at all.

Mostly lawsuit/responsibility avoidance because a bunch of people in the 90s whined about stuff like MKs cartoony level of violence and crap quality FMV games so Momma over there doesnt sue because a game showed intestines and a half second of lady nipple to Little Jimmy.
Not that people still dont whine how GTA is horrible and corrupts kids while ignoring the rating system people like that wanted in the first place that basically tells them "not intended for children."

If parents were more responsible and cared for their kids to begin with these things wouldn't exist.

In most cases I see, not at all. Parents buying their kids Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption 2, and the online versions being mostly populated with kids on microphones being my prime evidence.

But even when I was a child my parents didn't care much for ratings, they did give me the talk about games being different from real life though.

I played Turok and 007 when I was growing up on the Nintendo 64. Compared to most mature and adult games now, those were kindergarten graded adult and teen content.

Inconsistent and strict? Aren't those opposites?

And no. Its for the parents, and aunts, and such. Otherwise you may end up with complaining family members. Who may end up buying, or gifting something, inappropriate for Little Timmy's birthday. We can't have that.
Its only a guideline. Its not a law, as far as I know.

Anyway, how is Spiderman not rated appropriately? Isn't it very clear how its done?

Without Age Ratings shown in games' info, majority of games would have been unavailable for us. Because, fascism is not a phenomenon out of this galaxy, it is just a few DETAILS, very important details saving the path of Freedom from the grasps of draconian mentalities.

This Age Ratings thingy is one of those which spits green acid (as Reptile does) over those who want to see "perfectionist rules" in EarthRealm.
