Plus, the developers of the AAA games won't be able to stop it anytime soon, anyways, even if they wanted to. The publishers call the shots and what they say, is an order.
Graphics should never be on par with gameplay i.e. fun factor.
We are getting closer to the ultimate expression of video gaming, namely a game where you wear a blindfold and listen to perfect gameplay via perfect sound technology.
Also take into account, that most games are made to work and look great a medium graphics.. people "by mistake" crank up the graphics settings for almost no gain and then complain about stability, issues, low fps, etc....
It is a battle they can´t win.
They already do this... have done this for many many many years... again.. people just don´t have much clue about tech or software in general and overestimate their system and ruin their own experience.
If you had to make a choice of what feature "thingie" that had to be the most basic of basics, what would it be to you?
Which is kind of a shame. Graphics are nice, but its great mechanics that make a great game; Games like minecraft or terraria or smaller indie games prove that great games don't have to have the most incredible graphics to make incredible games.
