I'd take an improved variant of the original. Something like RK95TP or IMI Galil. Or if we're sticking to the AK family, AK-103.

The AK-47 is such a piece of garbage in stalker games (especially Call of Pripiat, it's pretty good actually in the first game), going full auto is obviously suicide but even a burst of 3 shots have such a punch that it render this weapon hardly usable without modifications.

Shooting guns in real life is quite different from how they're depicted in most games. 7.62x39 mm is quite manageable for short bursts. Going full auto for the whole clip isn't really useful in most situations but still, it's doable. Even a PKM with 7.62x54mmR can be shot from the hip and kept under control when firing short bursts.

And if you'd end up in a fictional zombie apocalypse, there's most likely no need to shoot anything but single shots on semi-auto.

My go to is a 12.5-16 inch AR-15 with a carbine length gas system and an H3 buffer spring. The parts are easy enough to replace when they would break.
