Spiritual successors to Jade Cocoon?

I've played a lot of monster jrpg games in my life but the one that always stood out as my favorite was Jade Cocoon. The monster combination system was very interesting and the story was dark to the point where you had to question the morality of using the monsters.

I'd love to play a game like that uses modern technology for graphics and gameplay. Does such a game exist? I have never seen any other game in the genre that duplicates JC in either mechanics or having such a messed up story but I'd love to play one if it exists.

Edit: the sequel was ok but not as good as the first one.

To be honest i had to google it and i know games similar to this actually Dragon Quest Monster games and specificaly the Monster Joker ones on DS and 3 DS but that serie of games is pretty much dead too.

Those are ok but not quite what I'm looking for.
