Why do guys like playing female characters in games?

I've noticed a good amount of guys, not all, but a lot, who only like to play females in games. I used to be this way, but grew out of it, and now I don't care either way.

A good example of this is my good friend Ethan who I play Dead by Daylight with. He only plays female characters, and often likes to buy cosmetics for them to make them look more "pretty."

It's kind of odd, because you'd think since they're a guy, they'd want to play as a guy. I'd think being a girl would make them feel less tough or something, but no, that's often not the case.

So... can someone explain to me why guys often like to be female characters in games, if they have that option? I don't get it.

I never played once a woman if i had the option.The immersion wouldn’t be that great but i don’t have a problem to play as a fem character like in tomb raider but character creation or avatars for the players always male

In non-serious games, I pretty much always just play as the most horrifying looking monstrosity I can. Or a guy/gal who is bright pink and green haired and named either Rhubarbrian or Rhubarbara. I mean, that's a lot more fun than staring at a butt or something. There're dedicated websites for that sorta activity.

In serious games, eh, whatever feels right for the story, innit? I want to be immersed. So, usually I play as a dude, as I am one and it's quite easy to get in my own mindset. But sometimes if the occasion calls for it, it's girl time! And I do not stare at my own character's butt. Never. Oh no. After all, I'm a horse.

I've always liked characters like Lara Croft or Mona Sax (Max Payne games) because they feel genuine, interesting, good character development or learning of their characters, and simply how a female badass should be referenced or interpreted to.

Why would you think that? The word "play" is important - when we play, we're creating scenarios that everyone involved (hopefully) knows aren't real.

Nightingale armor in Skyrim is pretty sick as a female. I know curvy armor isn't that great but honestly its prob the only reason i do Thieves Guild and the only reason i play Female chars.

Not if you're playing from a first person viewing perspective. Maybe you like female encouragement during play. A female voice to motivate and inspire you, to commit all those gruesome acts in-game, similar to a muse or bard, who is playing a war song. Playing Doom Guy can become a bit boring at some point. All the guy says is: "Ugh!" and "Ah!"

I play a game to play not to look at a bunch of pixels in the shape of a human behind for 15 hours. Seriously what games do you people play that the most interesting thing in the game is the characters back side. When i play 3rd person shooters i hardly notice the character because i'm looking out for enemies and looking else where i don't stare at my character back side the whole time.

It's depend but in a lot's of games I just don't find the male character to look good or Interesting.

lot's of games have meat head as male characters and I don't like that. xD

If all games had good looking male characters like Leon from Resident evil or Samanosuke from Onimusha I'd play male characters much more often.

An the butts is the females survivors you may slaughter or play as.

I don't play female toons if I have the option. I'm not exactly physically attracted to video game characters, and I can relate more to the male representation.
