Sometimes I think that old school gameplay is more healthy
I have always loved retrogames, but there are also modern games that I love.
Expecially TES games, I love Oblivion, I love Skyrim (it took me some time, at first I didn't because Oblivion is better in my opinion), in general I reallylove concepts like customization, free roaming, being able to make choices, have a more immersive, "believable" and complex environment, but all those things are also more demanding, time consuming, and take much more dedication. And if you want an immersive free roaming game that is not just mindless chaotic fun but give you a satisfying sense of believable immersion of course there will be times when the pace will be extremely slow, or nothing will happen for a while, or things will become too repetitive (I don't play those games to finish them, but to keep playing them indefinitely, because this is the reason why I like them, this is what only them and not other kind of games can give me).
But as wonderful and fantastic those games and the way they make you feel can be, it is undeniable that more simple and straightforward games (the good ones I mean, obviously) give me a bigger aount of valuable things in less time and without asking that much dedication from me.
Maybe even they don't give me more, it becomes actually more in the equation because for sure they ask me much less to enjoy them.
And as much as I love customization the "responsibility" of the save file is very stressful too.
I use to keep all the save files I really care about, I have multiple backup copies of them, but I am usually very anxious about things, and when I was anxious about the possibility that a game got broken I just thought that I would have bought another copy of that game (back then when physical copies were a thing). It was very stressful for me to think that an object that I love so much could get broken but I knew I could buy another copy if something like that happened.
You cannot do that with save files.
The thought that if something goes wrong and I lose it it will not be that simple makes me terribly nervous.
I love customization, but everytime I play a game with customization I feel like it is not a finished product.
I could buy it again, but if the problem is that something bad happens to my save file buying a new copy won't solve anything. Maybe I won'tr be able to recreate the same situation, and it would probably be a nightmare just trying to do that.
I don't want to stop playing those games, and only play "old school style" ones, but sometimes I wonder if I should.
I have the feeling that it would be better for the quality of my life.
I would love to have enough time to play Skyrim every time I get up in the morning for one hour or two, and after that play every other game I like too before evening, but days are not made this way.
I'm not saying those games have something bad, I absolutely loved Oblivion and it has been a truly amazing experience, and even Skyrim has been an amazing experience too in a different way, even if I think that Oblivion is better. I am extremely grateful to have experienced those games. But maybe something that has been very good in a period of your life might be not the best for you in another period.

Before there were videogames, kids played a lot more sports in the outside world. That was more healthy.
Why play sports IRL when you can play Madden 08? :D

Bad policy to say "yes" without understanding what you're agreeing to.

Retro games are boring to me. Thats why I almost never play them. Even when I get old ones I used to play, I don't wanna play them.

I know full well what I agreed to. I quoted it.

OP if I could summarize it accurately, you fear losing save game files and you prefer older games that gave you the satisfaction without a lot of time commitment, right?

Save files today are secure and for the many years of RPG playing I have not experience 1 broken save file. Do put in faith and trust. = )

Steam has cloud saves too. It uploads your save game to your account as backup and able to sync it to latest version. You can also write batch files to create auto backups.

In older times there is playstation memory stick and floopy disks, and people can still enjoy save games. Life finds a way. : P

I think you just need to learn to better judge and divide your gaming time, OP. Leave the bigger games for the moments you have more time that you can dedicate to them, play the smaller games when you have less time. It's why I always have inbetweeners (mostly card & board games, plus some roguelikes and skirmish RTS games) readily available.

I can't really relate to the anxiety regarding saves and losing stuff. Yes, I keep a back-up save while playing games, but I don't care if it gets deleted once I'm finished with the game. And should something happen, I can live with it.
