Ideally you want to rest on your back while sleeping. Using a flat pillow to support the neck.
If you must sleep on the side, you should use a lifted pillow for neck support. Additionally you might have another pillow between the legs to support a straighter and more relaxed spine curve. The spine will still have a slight curve to it, as you need to shift your arm that you rest upon in front of your body. The lifted pillow is however key to take the pressure off that shoulder and still keep the neck straight.
If you don't have the correct support or curl up too much, then you end up with your problem. Cutting off the blood flow to a limb, making it numb and getting pins and needles in it.
2) If you sleep on your side, as I often do, I flex the fingers of the underside arm a couple of times as I am falling asleep, to ensure I am not numbing my hand.
3) The two pillow concept is good, I have been sleeping that way for years.
This is all Good Stuff™ and it pretty much reflects my take on the matter, especially the first several points.
I frequently awaken with numb upper extremities (one or the other, depending on which side I'm sleeping on), but then I'm long overdue for new pillows (they're on my stimulus check shopping list though 💰).
HAVE I BEEN SLEEPING ON THE WRONG SIDE THIS WHOLE TIME???
I've had this happen to me many times, now my arms dangle lifelessly by my side. No amputation necessary. I can hit people with them if I spin around really fast, but I’m not sure why I would want to do that. I guess it's interesting just knowing what I'm capable of.
