Is "nerd" a derogatory label or is it just a description?

In short, it is both. Depends on the context in which it is used.
I'd say it depends on the context similarly to certain insults.

A lot of people refer to themselves or others as nerds playfully, but it can also be used as an insult similar to "not having a life".

Generally speaking, all of those people however fall under the same category; people who you most likely don't want to be around.
Been called a nerd before and take it as a badge of honor, personally.
Well, im nerdy

Can be used for bad or good
Dr. Seuss coined the term in 1950.

It doesn't seem rude. He's a handsome fella.

It started out derogatory. Became cool for a while. And now it's slipping back to derogatory especially in the age of big tech.
Both to be honest depending on what kind connotation you're using with the word.

I mean we have the word weaboo which was used to describe someone who is way into Japanese culture and anime. But at the same time, people have used the word to those who are only casual fans of anime and mild interest in Japanese culture. Some people use it as a compliment usually used by anime fans themselves.

I also remember seeing people in instagram in 2015 or something where people put in things like "Gym Junkie" or "Book Nerd" or "Fitness Nerd."

Again, depends how you use it.
I presume it comes more into perspective when you use it in context, may it be a compliment or an insult.
I think it´s outdated. We should use the term: interactor.

too many syllables
Being called a nerd? So what?

As we know there are far more important things than being called 'names'

If anyone in the real world tries to put forward an argument using name calling and any amount of aggression I can't help instantly and literally viewing it from a 3rd person stance and just want to laugh at their them.

I'm 'old' to most of you and when I got to a 'certain' age (could be any and different for us all) then I actually find people ridiculous when these types open their mouths. Although laughing at these knuckle draggers can antagonise their brain cell...

To answer directly the question? I'd be very surprised if I was ever called a nerd in the first place. Other things yes, but not a nerd.

+1

Applies to every word even. As the saying goes, "Context matters."

Not sure myself. If I was called a c&$% I'd be under no illusion it would not be contextual. There is no ambiguity in that.
