Constantinople or Istanbul? Which one do you think sounds better?
For those who don't know and live under a rock Istanbul is one of the most populous cities in Europe located in Turkey and a popular tourist attraction. Constantinople was the previous name of Istanbul that they renamed somewhere in 1910s. Constantinople is the Greek version and Istanbul is the Turkish one.

Doesn't matter really. For some reason people get angry over it. Politicans do at least. Or they pretend to be.

desecrate historic churches such as the Hagia Sophia
For the record, Hagia Sophia being turned into a mosque again was erdogans little brain fart and unfortunately under current circumstances no one else has a say in it. Let's just say anybody with comparable (or greater) intelligence to a parrot knows that closing a museum that litterally prints money is a moronic act indescribable proportions.

It would have printed money a few years ago but the pandemic has likely caused a drastic reduction in tourism.
I don't know if it's reliable or accurate but I do remember reading somewhere that it was a popular political move to turn it back to a "mosque" so that was probably the motivation. In a post-pandemic world it may get turned back to a museum.

The city's name is "Constantinople".
The free world shouldn't acknowledge its supposed new name.
It's a Greek city under occupation by the Turks since 1453, it's not a Turkish city.
Ouch. I feel like you might get attacked by some Turks rn and get this thread....
Be at ease, it won't happen. Greeks&Turks are brothers-in-arms in this digital world.

This is absolutely true to the every last word.

Old uneducated goats are so easy to manipulate with religion and this is how they've kept the power for the past 20 or so years. This is also why voting rates are so high (90%+ compared to around 65% in the US) in turkey because this has turned into some kind of holy crusade at this point. A generational fight. A fight he is losing right now because old people are inevitably dying and a lot of gen z (and by a lot i mean around 7 million, there were a total of 59 million eligible voters in 2018 election for comparison) are voting in the upcoming elections in 2023. And i can tell you, genz hates him with a burning passion. In the summer of 2020, he streamed a zoom session in youtube with candidates of the (then) upcoming university access exam, people began spamming "#oymoyyok" (can be translated roughly as no votes for you) in the chat, they eventually locked the comments over this and the video got a dislike record.

This whole mosque thing was one of his last attempts to spur religious morons one last time. I can assure you the museum is going to be restored as soon as a sensible party takes over. First of all it is going to start printing money again when the pandemic is over and the second and more important reason is it was originally turned into a museum by the founder of the country. This was a big insult to him and his legacy.

You'd be surprised how many Greeks and Turks fight in comments on Youtube. It's because Greece and Turkey are rivals. Me personally I don't really see Turks as rivals. I don't have any positive thing or negative thing to say about them.

The civilians do not have any problem with each other. Most of them are friends and brothers/sisters. They dance together, eat together, entertain together. I recommend my Turk and Greek friends not to believe in the corrupt broadcasts of common media sources because once you get collected in their corrupted war-mongering incendiary programs, even parents will not be able to think good about their children nor children will have deep respects for their olders. Most of the common media sources are bought by literal MONEY terms and try to make everyone to be engaged in some type of war, be it a historic or modern one.

That's why i made an earlier post about extremely wealthy but corrupt Global Elite Families here. They need to make peaceful civilians to become enemies for each other (by using various historical or present events as a spark point), because it is the only way they can continue their corruption behind the scenes and laugh at both belligerents while enjoying their champagne. 🥂

Surprising considering all the bad blood since the late 1800's with two wars, conflicts involving Cyprus and the Greek minority in Turkey and to a minor extent issues in the Aegean sea.

History is written by the victor. Or by the loser, who just hands it over to the strong himself, like Macedonia and Skopje/Fyrom. OP, you've been had. It's Instanbul and it is Macedonia, not even "northern", as that shameful "memorandum" was supposed to ensure. Better luck, next time. And learn to vote for people who care about heritage and ancestral legacy, with strong moral compass, who would never soldout to foreigners.

Interesting fact is that part of the secret agreement during WW1 Russia was going to get Istanbul and the Bosphorus Straits if they declared war on the Turks.

Yes because Greek have the same vowels as Spanish. It's also because latin has taken some words from Ancient Greek as well.

Russia wanted Constantinople for a very long time. During the independence war of Greece it was their best chance to take it. And you can understand why anyone would want Constantinople or how it's known as Istanbul in the modern word. City makes almost 237 billion Dollars (2019). That's like more than some other countries.
