When they give the player an exposition dump, and throw the "show, don't tell" concept out the window.
When the main character is super powerful and shoooper goooood (a Mary Sue).
Every single drama that follows the entire concept of "I lost my loved ones, so now all I want is revenge, and I'm always sad and angry!!".
Etc.
Remember that Mortal Kombat trailer with some generic rap music in the background? That was absolutely horrible and I don't care if anyone thinks otherwise.
When it comes to gameplay in trailers, if I see someone playing it slowly and moving the camera so viewers can go "OMG THE VISUALS!", I instantly assume game's trash.
My red flags:
"JRPG" ... 🚩
"Anime" ... 🚩
"Deckbuilding" ... 🚩
"MMO" ... 🚩🚩
"Multiplayer" ... 🚩🚩
"PvP" ... 🚩🚩🚩
"Early Access" ... 🚩🚩🚩
"Microtransactions" ... 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
(There are some others but those are the ones that come most readily to mind.)
🤔
One of my life rules - if someone announced something big, they will usually fail. Those who can do it will be busy doing and have less talking.
-Lots of DLC.
-When 2-4 DLC is more expensive than the "digital deluxe edition".
-"Season Pass", especially when there's more than 1 "season pass".
-AAA, over-hyped game bound to be a mess on release for a couple months or longer
-Anything that's advertised on content creators videos as a sponsor.
-Blatant ripoff of another game, with different graphics but a similar name.
Yeah.
Anything with a EA or Ubisoft logo. Always looking for the catch.
