Why do so many gamers only play FPS shooter games all their lives tho they have the same gameplay?
I enjoyed FPS games a LOT when I was a kid (I didint have many games lol). But as I grew up, I stopped enjoying them cause they all had the same gameplay mechanics:

1. If you put more bullets into the enemy, you win. Or else he does.
2. You can take insane damage, like GOD
3. You throw a grenade right under an enemy, his body stays intact
4. Shooting an enemy on his face with less powerful guns, like a pistol does nothing to his face, and doesn't even kill him in one shot
5. There is NO concept of injury. Enemies are either attacking you or they're dead
6. etc etc

The last FPS shooter I really loved was Red Faction 1 cause it gave you the freedom to kill an enemy in multiple ways. For instance, I could kill a guy on a bridge by blowing up the bridge, or shooting him or making him fall . So I kept reloading earlier saves to kill the same enemy multiple times. Very few FPS games give you that freedom.

No clue, they must be full of anger and need to vent.

Life can be very stressful for some people. And they want to turn off their brains and not have to think much.

But fps games do have different mechanics and game feel. Rainbow six is different to apex legends, and that's different to say a Doom. Lots of ttk difference.
However, I too am tired of shooters. Matching crosshair to target quicker than the opponent gets old after a while. The only one I now play is Hell let loose, only because Its not dependent on being an energy drink infused teenage twitch shooter.
Otherwise it's strategy games all the way.

Guns are just a really fast stone arrow. And humans are pretty warlike. But society largely put a stop to just killing whoever you don't like.

fps shooters can make reptile brain happy.

Realism issues are no big deal. Video games are unrealistic by nature. MGO had instant kill headshots with any weapon and it was 100% ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Fun is way more important than realism.

Anyway, I suppose it's no different from dedicated swimmers or baseball players. Same game all the time.

Not every FPS is Call of Duty - some offer more strategic and fast-paced gameplay that appeals to a diverse range of gamers.

Oh probably why I liked Far Cry Primal a lot then. I liked using the branch bow and stone arrows a lot in that. Plus I got a re-curve bow IRL also for target shooting.

True I have arena shooters, corridor shooters, open world shooters, squad shooters. They all offer a different shooter experience.
If you're into the hardcore realistic shooter genre then there's Escape From Tarkov. Because of its nature, not everyone can enjoy the game (too hard/not much gunplay, etc.).

So it's just really up to people's preference and many of them prefer the arcadey type of FPS.

different? it's the same nonsense, an arena shooter where you kill or be killed, sometimes you might have objectives that the fights revolve around (CTF, objective based, deathmatch, last man standing and so forth). it's still the same thing, you still got to kill the other player and they got to keep killing you.

I wouldn't agree 100% but i'd say venting anger could definitely be a factor. FPS games also provide meaning and purpose (however shallow) that is often missing in real life In game one is part of a team with glory in victory. There is a clear defined purpose when one plays: kill these people, take this position, do X, etc. when your teams loses YOU are a loser which can speak to people at multiple levels and inspire people to work harder to better themselves...rarely in real life, it's projected on to the game.

On top of that identity stuff, there is psychology at play in game design: You are rewarded for playing, winning, earning XP by leveling up which unlocks weapons and attachments, skills and abilities, i remember in Modern Warfare 2 there were banners and icons you could add to your name that were earned through game play and tasks and when you killed someone that player say your name, banner, and icon, BF3 had dog tags that were customizable with different tags that were earned through playing the game and doing certain tasks, etc Napoleon once said he could get any soldier to fight for scraps of ribbon. Banners and dog tags don't add anything to the game but it's a prize you get for playing...this is basic Skinner Box stuff.

Fps is easy to get into. Just aim and click.

Play a sniper class, single shot highly accurate shots, the other player knows you have scoped him down and then jinks left at the moment you pull the tirgger, you miss.

you line up to shoot again and the other player jinks to the right and you miss.

right now you are starting to get annoyed. after a few more shots, members of the other team manage to kill you with a sniper of their own and then you get into a full anger mode. this process repeats to the point you can't take out the opposing sniper no matter where you try hide from them.

at this point you have gone from angry to really upset and the first immediate reaction without thinking is to vent. After 10 minutes, you come back to it after venting and then you get crushed by an enemy vehicle which not only surprises you but it's the "last straw", so then you pick up your keyboard already frothing from the mouth in rage, and you use the keyboard to destroy your monitor.

All that over a stupid fps game. It's not worth it to your health or your wallet over a duration.
