"mecha anime" and then puts Gundam with transformers.... and wants a serious answer.
They are the kings of mecha anime
THE TIMING oh yeah
There were some good stories about them... like Optimus Prime sacrificing himself cause he broke his moral codes, with Megatrón smiling in front of him, only to become mad when he realized that Optimus was dead for good, and he has nothing to do with it.
There were some amazing characters too. Nothing like the bs in the movies (or even the cartoons).
As for a good comic-book about mechas... "Dynamo Joe". Wasn't japanese, it was published by First Comics in the 90's (don't recall the year). And it was the story of one weird alliance between humans from Earth, humans from Empire (another human race kind of), and the Tavitans (cat people who were amazing), but there's other factions like the Cheyenne Nation (or Blood Nation sometimes) which could be seen kind of the "belters", but they're barely in the story.
All of them fight against a microscopic alien enemy who creates all kinds of ship-creatures. Millions of those microscopic aliens join and form something. And the story is about this war, and how they fight in it. The Dynamo squad, which is composed by a bunch of big mech soldiers, and then there's some others, like the Galax-C and so. It was totally amazing.
And of course... Macross saga. The most amazing ever (doesn't look so good these days, sadly)
Oh my god... such a wall of text...
Cheers!
Check out Patlabor, it's a legit good movie. It has a sequel as well.
If you want something more "silly" then watch super robot anime.
I'm watching Getter Robo Armageddon btw, and I finished watching Cybuster just the other day (I think you won't like this one though).
Maybe mecha anime isn't your thing? Although I know what you're saying about Gundam. I've only watched half of the UC series but Zeta Gundam was kind of repetitive and slow, imo, I mean I liked the ones I've seen but... I would have liked it Zeta more if it wasn't that repetitive with its plot. And I've found some parts kind of confusing, maybe it was because I've spent a lot of months to watch it because I was doing other things instead.
