Do you think that cars will ever be driven by joysticks?
Does this seem feasible to you or do you think this is ridiculous?

Please take a moment to comment/discuss.

I think aeroplanes already have them and I've seen this one film clip where the cab driver had this feature. I also feel that due to lack of technology steering wheels have been implemented in the past but due to the technology oriented society we are thriving for, it wouldn't seem so ridiculous to me if cars had joysticks as a method of control.

Clip in question.

As long as they only move in two dimensions, you don't need a joystick.

I know that they already are because I had a friend who was in a mechanical accident and got a specialized car that is available for disabled people that re-delegates some of the normal controls to other types of inputs, such as a joystick (which was, indeed, one of the alternative controls).

I see them now. https://youtu.be/JeY61nqb3SM
Having the steering wheel in front of the driver still helps to see how the car is turning.

Driving in video games is much better with a wheel and pedals. At least is was for me in Need for Speed.

Driving by wire is more common these days but frankly I would rather have mechanical control when the engine dies even if it is much harder to steer. All you could do with a joystick is play with it until you hit something.

Interesting feedback, I think.

I think we ought to stand still a moment at the timeless invention that is the wheel and perhaps wonder and at what kind of automotive inventions future may or may not bring.

I thank you all for taking the time to reply.

You can already drive cars with a joystick, im guessing you mean the PS and XBox controllers. If so its already possible to do so, all you need is a car you can program to receive signals from the controller, make a controller that can send out signals, connect them up and you got yourself a remote controlled car.
Well its not that simple but thats the general gist of it.

No but they will soon be driven by computers and satellites

The wheel is like... some sort of secret of the universe.

Here are some things that operate because of the wheel:
- cars, bikes, wagons, even planes have wheels
- loom, washer, dryer, even the sewing machine
- conveyor belts, factories (other equipment), printing press, and sawmills
- blenders, cotton candy machines, even microwaves have a spinning plate to make sure things cook evenly
- fans, helicopters, and the very important: centrifuge
- rock tumblers, water-wheels, and windmills

...just to name a few - there's actually a lot more than that.

If it's an efficient / useful machine, it probably has wheel somewhere inside of it.
(probably - I know there's exceptions, like the hammer - though, hammers can't mass produce without conveyor belts ...which have wheels)

Yes, eventually most won't know how to drive because all of the cars will be software driven. You should get to know Dill Doe, he has all of the answers.

Being the underachieving entrepreneur that I am ... I'm thinking joysticks would be a perfect opportunity for car companies to cash in on accessories and side businesses. Because you know it would be long until joy riding would become a thing, all of the related adult media.

Ryder could BE THE FIRST to offer joystick controlled trucks JOY RYDERS

It would be a good market for VR controls

Don't give them ideas. People remotely driving others into traffic accidents from the safety of their homes. OOPS! Oh well.

They have been experimenting for years on creating a car controlled by a joystick instead of a stearing wheel.

So far they have ran into the same issues computer uses have.

From trying wireless connected ones that could easily be disconnected the way any wireless gadget gets disconnected from a computer system to the conrol breaking or wearing out at the time its most needed.

They are still pushing ahead with attempts as shown in news stories like.

Remember wireless connections get disconnected easialy because by law in most states they have to accept interference from other sources the governments consider more important. From overhead power lines that we can hear disrupt radio reception to actual cell phone etc. jammers put in place by some government officials to combat texting and driving.

Not to mention the hijacking potential of essentially having a radio controlled device as the cars steering mechanism.

Even if the joystick is wired it is rather limited; having a standard steering wheel can allow for manual control in case of power loss. Sucks when power steering is disabled, but at least it gives a chance to avoid catastrophe.

I did see a car tailored for wheelchair bound people driving once; used a hand switch for brake and throttle but retained the standard wheel.
