Best FF for someone new to the series?
Last year I played through all the Tales of games that are on Steam so I'm looking for some new JRPGs to play.

If we're speaking Final Fantasy, you'll find the fanbase a bit split. Some will say the older games, some will say 6, others 7, and so on.

Final Fantasy X is probably the best for newcomers to the series.

It's not too long, and the gameplay isn't as complicated as some of the other games.

I’d say IX or X.

VIII is the most complex.

If you can handle old JRPGS then I'd just start from the first one. Which is what I did myself. There's tons of ports and different versions of the old games with modern day quality of life improvements. If you don't care for old classic JRPGs start from FF6.

If OP is a fan of academy mage Atsuko Kagari, then I'd recommend final fantasy XII zodiac age. Mages are extremely powerful with buffs, debuffs and attack which can drastically change the outcome of the hardest battle. They don't just heal. :erune: The characters are mature, world maps feel lively.

The original, 4 or 9.

Final Fantasy 1 is a classic in every sense, but gameplay is a bit simplistic. Once you get your party strong enough, most battles can be won by mashing the attack option. Of course, bonus dungeons added in later releases shake things up a bit.

Final Fantasy 4 is where all the standard elements were firmly established and they weren't being overly experimental with new gameplay mechanics. It also has a particularly engaging story of love and redemption, and a lovely musical score.

Final Fantasy 9 was at the end of the PSX period, and conceived from the start as a tribute/throwback to the NES/SNES period.

At any rate, 5 and 6 are my personal favorites. 7 is certainly a masterpiece, but a bit overrated and hasn't aged nearly as well as 1-6, IMO.

Similar to most Tales games, Final Fantasy games are not actually connected, unless it's obvious from the title.

So, play whatever you want. I've recently played my first FF, and I chose XIII because it was cheap, but looks good regardless.

XIII is FF only in name.
