Good car under 20K?
So I decided I will go a bit more conservative with the budget for new car, as we live in uncertain times.

Although Beemers/Mercs/Alfas/Porsches are tempting, I feel I would have too much expenses with them.

So I decided for something more rational - a compact car for a fair price.

So now I'm looking at things like Clio, 208, Polo, Giulietta.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think anyone makes a basic transportation car anymore. At least not for sale in the USA.
And it's impossible to find a used vehicle (in the U.S.) for <$1,500 on account of the "Cash for Clunkers" program back during the Obama administration.

...

And when I tried to find out what years that was in effect, I found that the Biden administration is planning on bringing it back. So, good luck finding any affordable used vehicle in the near future.

Always like a good asian built car. The two that come to mind are a toyota corola. Mine was a 99, ran like a dream until I sold it. Needed something bigger. And you are not gonna be fetching all the ladies, but a Subaru wagon. My wife owned one, and that thing was almost unkillable. Plus the wagon has a lot more room for stuff. Both tend to be very efficient fuelwise. My personal choice would be a Subaru Outback. I like having 4 wheel drive options. Got my blazer instead.

Read up on local dealers. If you can find a good one, used is the way to go. Get more bang for your buck.

The only cars I've been interested in are Diesel pickups. There are quite a few 2005-2015 F350's/S3500's for $15000-$20000 in my part of the US.

damn and I thought under 5k was conservative

Seriously. Later this year I will be looking for a nice used car in the 8 grand (US) range. I want something that will be reliable and will last longer than the auto loan I'll need to get it.

By "nice" I mean it starts up and drives. I don't care about luxury. It would be nice if the AC worked but that's not a requirement.

I was looking at new cars a few years ago and it's ridiculous. A display in the front panel, rear end camera for backing up, heated seats, ipod dock. Satellite radio and GPS. How much of that price tag is electronics that I could live without? I just need transportation.

I don't think anyone makes a basic transportation car anymore. At least not for sale in the USA.
okay but the rear end camera sounds great, reverse parking can suck it

If I was driving something big like a pickup truck I might care about it but I like little sedans. I wish we had something like the Japanese Kei cars here in the USA. I like the tandem seating some of the mini cars have. One front seat, one back seat, and a little trunk. That would be all I need.

Overpriced garbage with high maintenance costs.
Not to mention that people driving BMWs have... certain kind of reputation...

I'm crazy but not *that* crazy.

Maybe those slower choppers would still go but those "become a pancake at 300 km/h" things are a no-go.

Uhhhh... you know you can't legally drive at 300 km/h :P
Unless you're in Germany and even then only on autobahns.

Honda Civic (new)

New with warranty and likely a service contract, yes? I'd say you put the best option first here. I've had good luck with the few Hondas I've owned. Change the oil regularly and the motor will last forever*.

All the rest I'm either not familiar with or I wouldn't buy for myself. Then again, I tend to maintain my own vehicles and I won't buy anything that isn't user-serviceable. YMMV.

(*And it looks like you've picked the 1.5 turbo. DEFINITELY keep the oil fresh in it.)

((2nd edit: And with a 6 speed manual transmission, it's absolutely the one I'd pick for myself.))

You looking for reliability and something you won't have to replace if you have a kid or two, Buy a Toyota sedan. I personally find them bland but I cannot deny that they are reliable as long as you do not beat on them. Avoid anything Fiat, their transmissions are junk. The cars you listed are fun but expensive to fix when they break and they break faster then most.
