To be fair that's just one explanation of otherwise uncertain origins, at least according to wikipedia. Some sources say it did originate in India.

I thought it was invented in UK too since we love Indian food and decided to make our own but google says it did actually come from India and UK just populised it, not sure how credible that source is.
