US or Canada, where do I move?
A few notes first:

1) Please, please, PLEASE don't bring up other countries to this discussion because even if other countries are better than these 2, that's really not relevant right now.

2) Important decisions like this one obviously won't depend on answers on Steam forums, but it would definitely help me make up my mind.

3) Both countries are awesome, no doubt about that, so please don't start flame wars or anything like that.

Now, the question is, why would you recommend one of these countries over the other one and why not the other one?

Worth mentioning, I hate high temperatures and Summer, yet I love California (just an example) with its sunny weather and sandy beaches with palm trees just as much as I love getting under a blanket in Winter while it's raining and storming outside, so I would say I'm 50/50 on this one.

US and Canada are the 2 countries where I would love to live one day (maybe like 10-15 years, not soon) and I honestly wouldn't consider any other countries. Might not be objectively the best choice, but whatever, I just love these 2 countries and nothing will change my mind about that.

Thanks in advance.

At the moment, immigrating to different countries is quite limited - Canada may be an easier bet purely from the aspect of paperwork tho.
I hear BC is a nice place to live.

Definitely not anytime soon, maybe 10-15 years.

You could move to Niagara Falls and be right on the border between Canada & US.

Though everything is a lot more expensive in Niagara Falls.

I live in Minnesota which is a lot further north than many parts of Canada and it's still too damn hot in summer. Your best bet is somewhere right on the great lakes, on either country side.

Or the Northwest Angle.

I have triple citizenship two of those being Canadian and American. I have also lived for long periods of time in both countries.

It really is a hard call to make. A lot would depend on how wealthy you are and the lifestyle you want to live at.

Canada offers a cleaner environment. Less litter on the streets, people care more about that kind of thing there.

If you are looking for the city life of excitement probably the US has more options but less safety.. also with the flu issues cities and parties have been shut down. More bands tour the US than Canada but concerts may be a thing of the past.

Also with climate change <for whatever reason> Canada is a better bet for temperatures, but places like Vancouver on the west coast seem a lot warmer due to ocean effects.

Things like healthcare are kind of a coin toss.. and depends on if you are going to need to rely on the state for help or can afford things yourself so it comes down to if you are going to need a job and how much you can afford to have taken out of that.

Many things are pretty much the same. Most of Canadian cities are on the southern tier so going to the USA normally isn't a problem for visiting or tourism... either one you go to you could explore both easily.
Canada you would have to apply and take a test to enter, unless your a refugee. Just a reality check.

What's wrong with California though? No one I asked would recommend living there, but I just don't see why. I love the nature there (especially beaches) and cities like San Diego seem really nice and it isn't a "boring" state like Arkansas for example.

I was afraid it would come down to this.

In my opinion, Canada might be the objectively better country and I would love to live there for sure, but the US is just... the US. It's like the most iconic country in the world with the best nature and the most variety, at least to me.

One of my biggest dreams is doing a road trip all across the entire US, but I can't really say the same about Canada, etc.

It is absolutely lovely in BC/Vancouver... However, don't go there & expect to have the same comfort levels unless you are wealthy. It's really quite pricey to live there.

I think OP should narrow down to cities, not nations as there are vast differences between cities within each nation.

Also, I recommend doing a worst-case scenario projection. Some cities/areas may be desirable however if/when the shít well and truly hits the fan then you are going to want to be somewhere where you can survive.

Ideally, I want an interesting, charming and a clean city with a high standard of living for an acceptable price, with minimal crime, litter, run-down areas and so on. Also, I want it to be a big city, but definitely not overcrowded though and a good location would be nice too - both landscape and being close to major cities, not in the middle of nowhere (like how Boston is 4 hours away from New York and San Diego is 2 hours away from Los Angeles).

I think Boston would be great in every category except for the price, San Diego seems really nice too.

I've taken camping trips across both countries. Both have a lot to offer although the US has more varied climates and terrains I ended up living in the mountains of NE USA and the weather and forests are pretty much what I grew up with in Canada. Love the fall colors/colours ha ha. Deserts are cool to visit and as the song goes "It never rains in southern California... it pours" flooding and landslides are not uncommon. Again a fine place to visit but living there, not so much.

Another factor is what you like to do. If you ski I'd lean more toward Canada.

In terms of financial future? Canada has one of the best and most stable banking institutions. The US banks are too unregulated and it hurts the country having to bail them out.

The only thing saving the USA right now is the petrodollar and forcing people to use US currency to trade for oil.... those on "our" side. This is pretty much why the US can run with a deficit and make it a "special case"... and why we have wars to keep the status quo going. But that could collapse at any time, the balloon will probably burst making China the place you want to live. It may not happen in our lifetimes but it is another factor to consider before investing your life and future in a country.

With the way the pandemic is running & affecting economies it seems premature to settle on one particular place. Maybe make a list of desirable cities and cross-compare with survivability.
San Diego or any part of Southern California is reclaimed desert. Outside of developed area is just desert. I called it plastic people living in a plastic land when I lived there. No skiing there.

Cross country truck drivers often say Pennsylvania is the prettiest state to drive through. And you can live close to Philadelphia but still be out in the forests. I am up in the mountains here about 2 hrs from both Philly and NYC and surrounded by 3 state game lands and have deer constantly wandering around on my property and coming to the door looking for treats.

One thing about being in San Diego was that you could drive out to where the highway ended and go off-roading and shooting fairly close to the city... say one guy wipe out and killed himself , at least the ambulance got there quick. But if you like to off-road in the desert that may be a plus for you.
