Condescending
I know this is a pretty condescending topic :coconutlaugh: ...but I'd like to know why so many people think that others on the forums are being condescending to them, within like... the first post they make, even if it has relevant & helpful information.

Seems like a bit of an assumption to me but it's a really frequent one I see people throwing around (which is non-relevant to almost all topic-prompts & therefore spam) and it seems pretty rude & non-constructive to me ...condescending even. :steammocking:

So, first off... can we like... just chill out & relax a little more, guys?

⠀⠀⠀⠀:summersun:
:parasol:
:armchair: :candidlemontea:

Secondly, why are so many people so eager to see hate & take offense, especially to see thoughtful & informative responses this way?

Like... how many of you actually think that the people here wake up in the morning & think "Hmmm... I think I'll be condescending to someone on the Steam Community Forums today!" ...or aren't even trying to contribute SOMETHING to a topic when they post something relevant to the discussion?
(I know you all know how to read! ...now whether you're bothering to or not is sometimes up for debate.)

...and why?

It also depends a lot on the audience of a forum. Contrary to other forums I use (cooking, gardening, hobby, etc.pp.), it's more than obvious that the Steam forums have a huge amount of uneducated brats, illiterate nolifers all other kinds of asocial people around. That is to be expected though, so just concentrate on the normal users and you'll still have a good time here.

Besides that, people often can't take any criticism. I often get called condescending or rude when I call lazy people lazy, e.g. when they start a new thread about something while there already are multiple ones about the same topic on the toppage of the forum, or if the problem could be fixed with just one minute of research.

Because some people really do think like that. Stick around and you'll find out who they are. I find they mostly frequent the Hardware and Operating Systems, Suggestions/Ideas and VAC discussion subforums though. They aren't around OT that much.

I just ignore them.

Problem is that it's very hard to communicate tone with written words. (In a quick forum post, anyway.)

Some people are genuinely trying to get a rise out of people though. It's a subtle form of trolling. That or they were never taught any sense of internet etiquette.
I don't blame them for being condescending on the VAC forum. The majority of posters there deserve to be laughed at.

No one who's unaffected, "which means being insensitive towards a topic", goes out of their way to make a thread focusing on how people are hateful & wrong, you're obviously offended by an occurrence and are now taking it out on your personal crusade among this forum for it.

As mentioned previously, you're probably just viewing it from a biased standpoint and viewing it with misinterpretation from over analyzing the simplicity of the comments and taking them too personally.

You're very defensive towards how I word your choice of words even known I'm expressing it in your originally unedited point-of-view, how you're acting and how even known you didn't directly say "everyone" in your post, your OP does greatly suggests that you're talking to a general overall audience and as well, this in itself addresses everyone as you've told everyone to "chill out".

Anyways, from what I've read, when Steam Support typically weighs in on a disagreement, they typically encourage people to be "more friendly & have fun", which I don't see anything wrong with - hence the "chill out & relax"
You're trying to seek justification within on an irrelevant subject, I think you're trying to save your own skin to justify your original post, you must look inwards towards yourself and admit to yourself that you need to toughen up and admit that you've been deeply offended by a common internet occurrence that happens to everyone and that maybe you need to roughen up a little or leave for your own good.

You're going to have disagreements & arguments as you would anywhere on the internet,
and maybe even a swear word is involved but you need to learn that people are not going to "chill out for a second" because you've taken deep personal offence towards a comment or that you've been too picky & overanalyzed a comment from its original expression of meaning.

I'll repeat again; you need to toughen up or leave for your own good because in a place of open discussion such disagreements or negative opinions will & may frequently happen and you need to come to terms with that, you can't have this inferiority complex because people will prey upon you for that if you act this soft & offended over some online comments.

Not at all. Frequent forum-user:"Radene" is absolutely correct when he repeatedly states that discussions / arguments should be about sharing ideas and hopefully gaining new ones in the process, rather than trying to "win" or change someone's mind.

However, if one has something to say, there should be some meaning or value to it, otherwise... why even bother?
(You kind of have to contribute something that you think has value to a discussion if you hope to get any such things in exchange.)

That does not mean that I wish to "enlighten" you or anyone else. As far as I'm concerned, you are free to remain as ignorant, or simply of a varied opinion / preference, as you want, so long as you are not harming anyone.
Doesn't really make much of a difference to me how you live your life.

You can find similarities between just about anything - it really doesn't make them the same thing. So whether your claim logical or not, doesn't mean that it's correct, especially considering all the other factors it may be ignoring.

It's something that even comes naturally - you play a game, you get a game over, you try again & get further; under the hood, you're improving, you changed some things about yourself, perhaps without even knowing. Perhaps someday I will live the life & be the person that I want to be, entirely, but until then, I wouldn't want to have it any other way [than learning & improving].

It is extremely unlikely that there will not be more things I'd like to learn about & skills I'd like to further develop, though ...at least within the course of my human life-time, if that happens to be the length of today's longest living humans, or even if we manage to extend our lives by another 200 years.

I get why you may have that impression but I'm not a moderator & I don't often report anything. So... it's not my problem, lol!

Only reason I even mentioned it in the OP is because it's my line of reasoning for things like this post:

Like... okay. Either he got what user:"hotsauce" meant or he didn't. If someone thinks that someone had some intention other than being helpful or having an actual conversation by sharing something then perhaps they should ask about, clarifying what it is that they don't understand, rather than being accusatory.

...which is the point of this topic, pondering about why people are in such a hurry to jump to that conclusion (or a similar enough one) frequently enough, instead of reading / thinking about the response they received & asking for clarification if they either didn't understand or didn't see anything useful about it.

There's a time & place for the term "condescending", I've even used it myself, but it has a very specific meaning & seems to be overused, likely even as an conclusion that someone has honestly formed in their assessment.
Personally, your usage of it in that other topic fits, fairly well because what one person sees as playful humor can come across to others as obviously disingenuous or insensitive (thus: condescending).

Overall, I think it's a subject that people generally place too much emphasis on. The only time I think ego-based subjects are worth interjecting into other subjects that are not about social conduct, is when the ego-based attribute is so prominent that it's getting in the way of having a meaningful conversation.

Now, I don't know if you wish to continue but this has been a pretty good conversation so far, in my opinion.
I might not be gaining any "enlightenment" from it (*lol*) but it's been a good exercise in writing.
(Which is pretty much the only reason I write on the forums as frequently as I do. ...aside from certain hubs like "Baba Is You" where mostly I just want to help others enjoy a great game.)

There's no point in making counter-arguments against, or discussing one's reasoning with, someone who wants to claim that someone ( I ) said something that someone ( I ) didn't say.

I understand. I read it. (Perhaps I should make this clear since there's several people in here who don't bother to read the rest of responses in topics - though, if they don't bother to read, then they're not going to bother to check links either.)
It wasn't even really offensive, more-so just confusing as to why that was his perspective in the first place, from my perspective. ( I know you said that it actually was snarky but snarky is different than being condescending. )

His apology doesn't explain any reasoning for why he jumped to that conclusion (& he's not the only one who has done this), hence this topic for discussing what [thought process] might cause (not only him but also) people in general to jump to that conclusion.

I wasn't going to bring up the links but people seem to think that someone said this [, according to them,] to me, personally, and I was somehow [, according to them,] offended - when really after reading enough posts like that one, it inspired a deep curiosity in me that I thought would make an interesting point of discussion.

The links are simply relevant to full disclosure & explanation of my own reasoning (which some people aren't going to believe but hey... that's fine. I hear the fortune-telling & mind-reading businesses are really revolutionizing society (not).)

That post, in particular, is, indeed, the one that inspired this topic, though. By then I'd read this in several topics (such as the other one I linked).

Also, did anyone learn anything from this? I appreciate how controlled and civil this exchange was, but did anyone gain something from it?

Besides that, people often can't take any criticism. I often get called condescending or rude when I call lazy people lazy, e.g. when they start a new thread about something while there already are multiple ones about the same topic on the toppage of the forum, or if the problem could be fixed with just one minute of research.

That's the truth of it...

He did apologize.

We all now come to a mutual agreement, yes?
