What do you think about VR combined with smells?
I don´t know what to think... this seems crazy. But I can understand the idea behind this, but well my instant idea is that the "smells" will be used for something that has nothing to do with gaming or rather... well lets say more adult application..

But then again.. how does a headcrab smell like? or a wet coat? could this enhance enough to actually make it a good idea? What is your opinion?
I personally think it is much to early for this and again my fear is that it will be for stuff that are not what it was intended for in the first idea.
Another problem, might be that these smells ? Vials might contain harmful substances or might cause other issues.

Apperently some games already use this!

Take a look at the Smell-O-Vision with Linus here.

I think that they should focus on the haptic vests for now and worry about stuff like this later. First haptic vests, then treadmills that relate to in-game movement (which sort of already exist, but make them good enough for full-scale VR)... Then true motion sensing so you don't need any controllers, e.g. gloves which react to your hand movement in-game..... Then something like this.

Maybe. I think you might be right, that they should not make this a priority before much later on! While VR have existed since the 70´s we have only seen a small increase in progression and tbh it is still in its toddler stage. I reckon it would be better to focus on the stuff you talk about.

That being said. Smells would help games become more immersive.

Also, this could very well be extremely limited. I don't think anyone would want to play a horror game and smell every single rotten corpse around the room, as well as the metallic scent of blood and gore, and the sewage-like smell from the monster of the moment.

Last thing my broken mind needs is a man inhaling foul stenches.

considering that many games involve combat and death, the smell of rotten meat would be very common. And after emptying a broken refrigerator last week, I can tell you its not only awful, you still smell it hours later. I think I'll pass on the smell tech.

Well, with the interesting amount of broken refrigerators that are found in most post-apocalyptic and horror games out there, I could say pretty much no one would play them.

Just to give you a mental picture: imagine playing Resident Evil VII with smells ON.
Such a wonderful experience, specially at the dinning table.

yea, yuck. I'll pass. Those who do not know the smell of rotten meat, its worse than you think.

I would much rather see them improve movement in VR, because the 'press-button-teleport' type movement is rather dissapointing. And ofc, make VR more affordable. The latter will happen eventually but they need to speed it up.

"adult applications" has always been the number one use of VR

the experience is still pretty ♥♥♥♥

Some might for the ultimate experience, but then again, what about an adventure game, you smell the green fields, the lavish red wine or the hair of the romance option... It does not only have to be "awful" smells..

VR is actually mostly used for science, not gaming etc. The VR we know is rather simplistic still. That being said most likely you are right

Wow. They've actually made VR even more gimmicky...

southpark did a nosulus rift gimmick to market their game.

shouldnt be too hard to add regular vr screens to that.

problem is though the nosulus rift had a very short shelf life and had none replaceable smells, once they wore out they were gone for good.

and how would it even work? if it can only hold one smell at a time what about the other smells the scene would have? unless theres a way to add custom made "sets" combining multiple smells for the game that eject when an event is triggered in the game the whole idea would be too expensive to be productive and you would have to constantly buy refill packs to get the smells in the game so it would hit the wallet hard too, I can't imagine custom made smell packs to be cheap either.

I think in the future its a very realistic idea if it can be made to be both reasonable from a production standpoint and affordable for the consumer, but for now its just not ideal to have.

This already was a thing 10 years ago, but it was doomed to fail.
However, it could be interesting for cinemas, underlining the more aesthetically pleasing movies or documentaries.
In games? No, thanks.
Either way, it needs further development. Maybe in 20 years...

There are plenty of those gimmick things yes, but none you could actually buy for real.
Look at the video I linked, it blows "smells" toward you and then stops when you move away from the area, object, etc. I have seen a VR set with a smell component attached, but that was deemed problematic and banned most places so well.

I agree that the "trick" here is that they can get you to buy refills.
