Does anyone use "Home row" typing?
Home row typing: the typing method where your left hand sits on the A, S, D, and F keys, and your right hand sits on the J, K, l and ; keys.

During middle school we had a typing class, and they really tried to teach us to use the home row typing method.
My question is: Does anyone actually use home row typing?

Yes. I had a typing class in ninth grade, and learned it fairly well. I have used it ever since.

Probably the only thing I learned of value, in 14+ years of school.

I only type with on finger

No. I learned to type alone, without any help at all, and I only use the index and, sometimes, the middle fingers. That doesn't mean I'm like a dumbass grandpa or something. I type fast.

I don't. I type with 3 fingers from each hand. My only home row keys are Index on D, Middle on W, Ring on A, Pinky on shift, and thumb on spacebar.

I just smash my face into the keyboard repeatedly and whatever happens is what gets said. As you can see by these somewhat coherent sentences, I have a lumpy face that rolls around pretty well.

Yes.. that's how I was taught to type back when there still was typewriters... I can do it pretty much blindfolded... but I never was very fast..

Yep. Sure do. Do it in Dvorak too. But i am slower on that. I just learned it for my own amusement.

I took typing classes for 5 years, throughout junior high and high school. I'm qualified to be a secretary and, with a little more training, a medical transcriber. Even with my damaged left hand my median WPM is 60. Of course I use home row.

There are marks on both the F and J keys, so you can even feel the location without needing to look down.

As you touch type, you will naturally learn to hover and rest your fingers on the ASDF and JKL: accordingly. The idea is you want minimum movement and the shortest distance, both with raising your fingers and moving them from key to key. That in turn increases your typing speed greatly while using less effort.

Shorter the distance = Greater the speed and control

Just keep on practicing. I learnt as a kid and got really into it via playing typing games. Zombie shooters, etc. It was fun. However, avoid rushing yourself and stressing out about it. Rather stay relaxed. Correct your positioning and movements. Let the speed come later on more naturally. So long you learn correct finger independent, make sure to use the correct finger to the matching key(s) and that you aren't dragging other fingers with it.

The same deal goes for if you wish to shred on the guitar, which I happen to also play. Speed actually comes from reduction of the movement required. That is key. Breaking the bad habits is the hard part, so learn to correct those.

Some games which really helped me practice:

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing
(the original was good, I don't know how this one compares however)

Home row: yes
Typing properly: for the most part yeah, not all keyboards are made equal though and I have wacky spiderlike hands so i have to adapt a little.
Why: accuracy, touch typing, and greatly reduced hand fatigue even on the average qwerty keyboard. speed is easy, but consistency and comfort is not - typing is an unnatural act
Valediction: goodbye
Yes and i can type 50 words per minute which is kinda slow.

i dont know who "mavis beacon" is but that software looks like some cringey requirement class using late 90s software in middle school
Yeah I do this. Basically I think I have a touch sense of where my fingers are relative to the keys, so I can type entirely without looking at my hands.
