apus are going to take over what use to be the low to mid range, they are actually good enough now that an add in card for that spec is kind of a waste of money, and an upgrade to an old cpus apu will be a used high mid to high end gpu 4-5 years out. right now we are in the middle of a silicon shortage which will pass, but in the meantime is a nightmare if you needed a gpu.
and also with upscaling, both ai and amds post processing we will likely see gpus last far longer than ever before, because one of the biggest upgrade reasons, play at a higher resolution, can now have a 720p source upscale to 4k, granted, its not perfect, but its playable and most people are ok with this, remember, right now its about 1200 for a gpu that can touch 4k60 or getting lucky and only paying 600$ for it.
also as the crypto ♥♥♥♥ goes forward, proof of work is going away, and the few that have a proof of work are over time less and less mineable on gpus, once everywhere were power is near free outlaws mining, and this will happen, the issue is gone.
realistically, we are in probably the best if not one of the best times for pc gaming, lets put it this way a 290, an 8 near 9 year old gpu is capable of running modern games, with settings turned down, but mostly mid to high, and getting 1080 60 -1440 60 fps, im not going to say this is ideal, but when has an 8 year old gpu been able to do that? a 970/980/1060 is also capable of doing this, though the 970 has stupid issues.
once the upscaling full implements, these gpus may have another 2-3 years of life.
but personally, I use a computer for other things than gaming, so I can subtract every other aspect of computer and only consider the gpu price as the 'gaming' tax, in that respect, its a bit more expensive than a console, but FAR more worth it then the console.
Nobody (worth listening to) cares if such and such platform has better graphics than some other platform.
The only worthwhile consideration has always been and will always be libraries.
but as someone said before, if you play on mid tier settings you can use your gpu for like 5 or more years. in the mid 90s you had to buy a new rig like every 2 years to even run new games, so... yeah the shortage is real but you can work around it if you can still sell your old gpu und pay up a bit to buy a new one.
back then we had a 2 fold issue, hardware ran near if not on metal, as in they ran very low apis so games had to be made nearly specially for gpus, and hardware gained speed at a near double per year and games took advantage of that.
up intull pentium 4/amd64 era, pc needed to be updated near constanly,
once you had a core 2 duo or amd64 x2, you were good, even a quad core core2 or phenom II would get you by at 30-60 today, and if you have a sandy bridge or newer its hard to really justify an upgrade on performance in games alone unless you need 120+ fps.
Personally I needed an 8 core for all the ♥♥♥♥ I do in the background, but realistically if all I did was game a quad core would be good enough, and honestly, an old dell workstation with a gpu upgrade (possibly a psu that is hooked up to the gpu alone because of how sit of a oem dell is with proprietary ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) would be manageable and that crap can be had for 300 or less on a base pc basis, gpu and psu not included.
Also, have you seen what Forza Horizon 5 will run on?
Hint: a potato.
Meanwhile, they won't, because AA companies like Supergiant will still be making great games.
All the rest of us small peeple will have to make do with scraps. As Bruce Hornsby sez:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOeKidp-iWo
some are crap , some are average but there are still great games that come from there that are actually more entertaining then anything that the AAA developers make these days.
For the topic no, because people can downgrade and buy cheaper ones - or the company can mass produce cheaper ones.
However it is hurting the future. When new 3070 is only $500 by default, it means every other graphics card below 3070 can be reduced by a significant amount. Maybe for $100 you can get a very strong card to play many games at high quality, and developers can now publish more stunning games.
The next milestone in game culture is ruined all because scalpers wanted $2000 from the $500 card. Your current card had became more expensive because of that. Will you overspent on what's the same when the time arrives? Strategically you will downgrade.
If this continues, in 2025 games will still look like 1998.
Well i don't mind a streaming services with how expensive everything is.
