TL;DR:

BR is brain-dead simplistic mobile trash, even if it's PC-only, it still plays and feels like mobile trash. Whoever disagrees with this fact, just means is personally insulted by it, because he plays the BR mobile trash on PC with the RGB peripherals for extra skill.

Most definitely the BR trash has ruined gaming a lot. Not entirely, but it has contributed to ruining the shooter subgenre as much as Survival / "sandbox" trash have ruined the RPG subgenre - by both being lazily created games about nothing.

I don't like how every FPS that releases nowadays is BR or something similar to BR, like Extraction, which to me is just BR with a slightly different objective.

Some people say "if you don't like (or hate) BR, then just ignore it".

Well, how can I ignore it if I want to play traditional FPSes, but such are no longer bring released at all?

Am I supposed to play the same old games from 15-20 years ago ad infinitum? They get old and boring, I really enjoy Star Wars Battlefront 2004 with bots, but that game gets so predictable after less than an hour. I can't play Counter-Strike for the rest of my life either, CoD and BF games have become trash also - now they no longer have bots for MP and they only function online (aka live service trash) so after their servers shut down, I can't play anymore, therefore I see no reason to buy such games.

I've found some games like Insurgency Sandstorm, Insurgency 2014, Halo Infinite, Out of Action, Star Wars Battlefront 2 2017 which support offline bots, but they are only a handful in the ocean of BR tash.

What I hate about BR is as follows:

- the fact that the whole game is just one game mode (pathetic and lazy, like the BR developers)

- the time it takes to matchmake and get all the people (30, 60, 100) to start a match

- the plane you start on and have to jump from

- the fact that you have no weapons and have to rummage and scavenge through buildings to find random loot

- the fact that the map is so big, the fact that it's 95% nature in every BR game, the fact that the map is so empty (I wish at least for there to be a BR game where the map is just the downtown area of a city with 40-story buildings where you can go on every floor and enter every room, no exception) ... the fact that the game map in BR games is so lazily made - like some program for random terrain generation was used and them some houses were slapped around

- the objective and the gameplay loop feels so boring and uninspiring - you need to be the #1 ... what's up with all this individualism propaganda in games? what happened to team play? work with your team and win together as a team? when I play Search & Destroy or TDM or Payload or Conquest in older FPS games, I am more pumped up to sacrifice myself as many times as I have to as long as in the end my team wins the objective, but with BR, I can't even feel inspired or psyched about winning, because the goal is so stupid

- the fact that the whole objective of the game and the whole gameplay loop is 90% luck-based and only 10% skill-based

- when you die, it's game over for you and you have to repeat the whole process - matchmake, fly on the plane, jump off the plane, scavenge, run around, hide, run around, scavenge some more, find people to kill

- live action / GAAS (game as a service) trash that lives as long as it has enough players and servers haven't been shut down - if there aren't enough players, you can't play, because there are no bots, if there are no servers, you can't even access the game at all and if you were stupid enough to spend money on it, it's also lost, only the sense of permanent stupidity accompanies you for the rest of your life

What I like about traditional FPS games:

- it has multiple game modes in one game - S&D (bomb), TDM, FFA, Round based Elimination, CTF, Payload, Conquest, KOTH, single player campaign and more

- maps are small urban areas and most follow the layout formula of de_dust2 from Counter-Strike, which allows you to learn a map in about 15 minutes of play

- it's 90% skill-based and 10% luck-based - you need to know the maps, grenade spots, where each team comes from, the psychology of the players, you have to learn per-match each player's psychology or personality - who's aggressive, who's passive, who rushes, who camps and how to deal with all of that information to help your team win, BR doesn't have this as it's simplistic mobile trash

- maps being urban have 90° on most surfaces and surfaces/textures are not nature-based so it's easier to see movement and tell apart enemies from teammates

- game modes are just superior to BR and more straightforward - plant/defuse the bomb, kill more enemies than the enemy team to get the better score, etc.

- when you die, you either respawn in 5 seconds or wait for the next round, the game isn't over for you so if you are starting a new game, it's easier to learn from your mistakes, in BR it is more punishing - ending the game for you and forcing you to go through the whole process

- the game having bots, single player campaign, offline mode, LAN play, dedicated server support

This is why I think BR has ruined the genre - it became a fad and now it's 95% guaranteed that every shooter game that released since 2018 is a BR POS or Extraction trash or some BR/Extraction POS trash like The Finals, which is about to release soon on Steam.

With all my heart I hope the BR/Extraction fad dies and all the games of that fad with it and there is some FPS renaissance where we go back to the roots of FPS games with tactical/arena game modes and the mixture of both - games inspired by Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament 99, Counter-Strike and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2007, preferably a mixture of all of this into one game will be the best, there were a lot of games like this in the past, mostly Korean ones:

- Combat Arms
- Soldier Front
- Soldier Front 2
- A.V.A. - Alliance of Valiant Arms
- Arctic Combat
- Blackshot
- Genesis A.D.
- Operation 7
- Mission Against Terror
- Crossfire
- War Rock
- Point Blank
- Ghost in the Shell First Assault
- Black Squad
- Ironsight
- Blacklight Retribution (not Korean)

They are literally a combination of gameplay mechanics mostly from CoD, BF and Counter-Strike all combined into one game:

- weapon customization from BF
- movement from CoD, but slow paced like Counter-Strike
- game modes from CoD and Counter-Strike

I really miss those times when shooter games gave you so much variety - if you did not like one game, there were 20 others to choose from. But now the BR trash is so generic that one game feels like the rest - if you've played one, you have played them all.

The only ones that like BR are little kids who haven't played older better games and don't know any better. The few adults I've seen enjoying BR or Extraction, I think they have mental problems.

Yes, definitely.

The idea of a huge open battlefield and people killing each other as the map slowly gets smaller and smaller isn’t a bad idea.
