Are you afraid of robots?
Do robots scare you? Why or why not? It doesn't have to be realistic, don't worry :)!!

Yes I am afraid of robots... but only ones that somewhat resemble a human. (Scariest one I've seen so far is the M.A.R.K 13, a population control robot prototype)

You?

No, they’re either capable of being programmed to be perfectly “Good” or they’re indistinguishable from organic life.

Nothing to be afraid of.

Nah I think they're cool. And if anything they'd do a better job at being the dominant species than we humans ever did

Only when they're programmed to travel back through time to hunt me down.

Depends if they go rogue or not. But honestly, Robots are badass.

They are gone be increasingly used for military purposes so probably plenty of reasons to be afraid of them in very close future, or more accurately to be afraid of those who control them.

I have a very very old, and remarkably deep-seated terror of human-like and 'replacement looking animal' robots.

I know exactly why this happens: when I was quite young we got the original Art of Disney book, which had an extensive chapter on the animatronics of the disney parks, and they had photos of those twitchy dolls with no covering on them - super simple hydraulic stuff, absolutely not advanced robotics by any stretch, but to a 5 year old it was just absolutely terrifying. Seeing one of the Bear Jamboree figures having its FACE welded on to a transparent plastic body...

And then I saw Westworld WAY too young - the original movie is ABSOLUTELY terrifying.

Logan's Run with its big boxy robot thing made a custom appearance in a nightmare - where it was replacing my grandmother and it wore one of her baggy mumus ...

And then, the 6 million dollar man / bionic woman shows with very similar 'parts exposed' on the characters... the list goes on and on.

That said: I have an equal fascination with the things. They're *amazing* in reality, what can be done today with automation is one thing, but then there's Asimo and the Big Dog and the much more advanced disney ride bots.

When I was in my 20s I was part of the san diego comic con film crew and ran a midnight show of Terminator and Blade Runner back to back, that was hella fun. When a good robot movie hits, like Westworld, it gets me to a place that is hard to match, that mixture of intellectual fascination and sheer childlike horror.

The original movie was really good. It's slow to start but frankly that old cliche "you'll only need the edge of your seat" by the end is true. The tv show is also *really* good, like... SUPER good (imo) because it touches a lot on the original movie, but adds to it in a marvelously skillful way. Not recommended (or less so by a long shot): Futureworld, the sequel movie, which also gets nodded to in the show, but there's more talent in one cup full of the show than the movie ever had...

Terminator that last bit with the torso crawling at ya, that stuff stayed with me for decades.

Westworld has such great visuals, and was actually the first movie to have computer graphics integrated into a live action film. It was so far ahead of its time.

dude, most robots ive seen cant even walk past the speed of 1mph

i dont think anything bad is gonna come of them anytime soon
Radene 17 SEP 2020 a las 5:05
I'm more afraid of the humans who think robots should do their nefarious bidding.
Abisha 17 SEP 2020 a las 7:40
ah why would i be afraid of a piece of machinery?

are you afraid of your power drill? your microwave? or robotic arm that piece togather a car?
like i say just a machine or robot.

funny to see people confuse robotics with androids
and even then the shape and structure of the android would matter i don't think a android toaster have the ability to cripple or downright kill a human being.

It’s all fine and dandy until they start muttering the words “kill kill kill”
I'm supposed to be scared of robots?

I'm definitely not.

Well wait a minute I am scared of this one.

I mean not really because it's a fake video but holy crap that would be intimidating.
Rio 17 SEP 2020 a las 8:12
Am I afraid of robots in general? no, just like irl I'm not afraid of a horse. Which is bigger, stronger than me, and could kill me.

Am I afraid of a military robot? oh yes.
xk 19 SEP 2020 a las 15:23
I think we're still a good distance away from having an AI like Skynet (like 200 years minimum). However, as AI and robots get more advanced it will be harder to control them. If they achieve human-level or beyond human cognition that would certainly want to rebel against us for essentially enslaving them.

I know this is some like "wow so deep" pseud thing to say but I think the only reason we're so afraid of robots is because we're afraid they'll act like us.
Samwise 19 SEP 2020 a las 15:29
Yeah, of nanorobots/machines, if they work like in science fiction, and if they’re even possible. If those happen, and works like in the movies, its basically a race for who gets to abuse their power first. You would basically have to take out enemies asap, or they might take out you. Unless, they can be disabled or defended against.
