Necronomicon?
Probably a weird place to ask this, but what the hell!

So earlier today I was watching a video by a channel, who I will not link right now out of laziness, that was talking about mandatory reads for a DM in D&D (basically must reads for people wanting to have more fun in D&D and construct a better campaign). The guy recommended the Necronomicon, the anthology collection of H.P. Lovecraft's stories.

After watching the video I asked my dad if he had ever read the Necronomicon, and he said no, but he had heard of it. As it turned out he was talking about something completely different. What he was talking about was pretty much a Satanic/Evil Bible, saying that that was one of the few books that he would make me not bring inside of the house (we are a Christian family, but not like those hard-core Christian families that you see on TV and in other forms of media).

Well, I decided to take a look for myself as to what he was talking about, so I looked up the Necronomicon, hoping to find some articles about it, how it was discovered, who wrote it, and what it says. To my surprise though all that I found out was that it was a fictional book in one of Lovecraft's stories. And after doing an extensive search of going to page 2 of Google I could not find anything that was at all like what my dad was talking about. Besides, from what I briefly glansed over, the Necronomicon isn't even an evil Bible, but instead a book of names of evil people.

So here is my question, was the Necronomicon a real thing? Or was it really something that existed?

P.S. - He might have gotten it mistaken with the Devil's Bible, which I know about, and I'm sure that he does too.

Necronomicon refers to the fictional book in the Lovecraft Stories.

No connection with the real life

The Necronomicon is not a real thing. It was pure invention by Lovecraft.

A joke "real" Necronomicon, however, was written and published by a guy named Simon utilizing fragments of stuff from Aleister Crowley, Agrippa, the lesser key of Solomon, and other extant grimoires at the time. It's basically a mishmash of different stuff presented in such a way that all meaning is lost and it's gobbledygook.

i heard about this book while playing kingdom come.

from the codex it says: The Necronomicon is a fictional magical book invented by the writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft in 1924. The name literally translates as ‘the book of the dead’. This was supposedly a volume written in the 8th century by a mad Arab, Abdul Alhazred, containing dangerous information on the practice of black magic and the occult. The Pope had the book banned and ritually burned, yet copies spread around the world. All this sounded so plausible that many readers took the existence of the book for real. The hoax was helped by the reference to Queen Elizabeth’s Mage, John Dee, who had supposedly translated the book, but according to Lovecraft he had never published it. The book’s fame spread further and wider and it has become a living part of pop culture (to which we also subscribe).

Real or fake, it certainly likes to make an appearance in media.
Off the top of my head, I've seen it in:
-The Mummy
-Kingdom Come Deliverance
-The Binding of Isaac
-Spelunky

That's actually wrong. "An image of the laws of the dead" would be closer to what it "literally" translates to, it's constituent parts from the Greek are "nekros" = dead, "nomos" = law, and "ikon" = image.

anthropodermic bibliopegy was an actual thing. I already said the Necronomicon was made up.

Books covered in human flesh we not.

Why does everyone always assume I am somehow the least informed in the room?
