Are prefects real?
The game "Bully" has 4 students who patrol the school, enforcing the rules and busting and beating people who break them, and then taking them to the office.

According to Google, a prefect is a student who has been given permission to enforce discipline.

I have never, ever seen any school with prefects in real life.

Has anyone here actually ever went to a school with prefects?

Teacher favoritism
Na man, they get weeded out by all the normal students usually. By either no one wanting to be their friend, or slightly worse but not physical methods. Atleast in my school, at 2nd grade I'd say a hefty 15% of students were prefects, now in 10th grade there's less then 10.
We're on a prefect hunt! And don't think we don't know how to weeeeed 'em out!
I thought prefects where an American school thing?

It's a senior nerd would is given permission by the school to hand up detentions to bullies, waggers, etc. As the teachers are too lazy and need a scapegoat to blame, rather than looking like the bad strict mean guy themselves.

Only seen in movies.

We had something similar to a prefect in our school. Basically, the best 20% or so students would be assigned the role of discipline enforcers, where we would walk around during breaks between classes and confront misbehaving students (and report them to the school administration if they do not comply). The system was pretty crappy, IMO, and it only led to more grudges between students (especially between prefects and non-prefects) brewing, and the overall discipline hardly improved as a result.

Eh, it wasn't really by choice. :p In any case, I was one for a couple of months, I think, and honestly it was a complete waste of time. It's not like a kid walking around a hall can change someone's behavior long-term.

Yeah, I ended up being one for a while. Not very enjoyable. If anything it might worsen someones behaviour in the long-term. In my opinion prefects are just the schools way of saving money, by not hiring monitors/paying extra .
Depends on how the prefect system works. Depends if the school gives a crap if anyone is assaulted. Some schools are strict and would take action if a prefect was beating others up because thats not the type of student that should be in prefect position.
