Help Me With My Homework!
I’ve reached the bottom of the barrel. During finals, I need some goshdarned help. I have some chemistry homework here, and I can’t figure out a few of these questions. Help me out!

“If a light has a wavelength of 545 nm, what is it’s frequency?”

“Give the empirical formula for the following compound: Al6O9”

“A compound decomposes into 63.2 grams of carbon, 5.26 grams of hydrogen, and 41.6 grams of oxygen. What is it’s empirical formula?”

(P.S, if someone answers these correctly, and they are correct on the homework, I will send a gift to them! Hooray!)

The wavelength in question 1 needs to be converted to meters. The frequency is equal to 3.00e8 divided by the wavelength in meters.

In question 2, you are looking for the lowest whole number ratio between the atoms in the molequle. Divide both subscripts by 3.

Question 3 can be solved by first converting the masses to moles, then finding the ratio between them. The ratio can be found by dividing all the mole values by the lowest one then rounding to the nearest whole number.

1. 5.5 x 10^14Hz

3. C2H2O

Not sure about #2.

I believe #2 is Al2O3

To show how I got those numbers...

There is a formula to get frequency: f = v/λ
1) (3 x 10^8)/(545x10^-9)

2) Al6O9 = 6 atoms for Aluminum and 9 for Oxygen. Which gives you an atomic weight of 26.9815386 for Aluminum and 15.9994 for Oxygen. Therefore, the percentage would be 52.9251% for Aluminum and 47.0749% for Oxygen. According to this
site[www.webqc.org]. Then just input the info into a Empirical Formula Calculator and voila.

3. I took this one from YahooAnswers and explains it well.

God, you guys are so helpful. I love how you both explained how I get these answers, and how I can get them next time. Thank you so much.

Do your parents know that you're asking people on the internet for homework answers?

Yes. Because knowing how to find the wavelength of a light source is a skill a 16 year-old boy legitimately needs to understand.

I honestly cannot imagine a single situation in my life where this information would be required of me to know.

Um, don't you mean everyday? I'll be walking down the street, when all of a sudden the world depends on my ability to find the empirical formula of a compound!
2+2=4-1=3. Does that quick math help you?
