Whats the difference between Orcs and Goblins?
All I know is Orcs like a mid RPG game enemy, and are like 1st if there is no rats.
What I've learned so far

Orcs:
Big
Tribal
Dumb
Stronk

Goblins:
Engineres
Small
Not smart

Dwarves aren't Gnomes

Gnomes:
More tech
Smaller than dwarves

Dwarves:
More mining

their scent, size, language, personality, race, culture, and ofcourse spelling xD
Typically, Orcs are large, strong, slow, dumb and fewer in number.
Goblins are small, weak and dumb, but fast and swarm enemies in large numbers. There are times where this is inverted though.

The goblins in the manga goblin slayer are more like the orc archetype, and Warhammer 40k orks are closer to the goblin archetype.

40K Orks are wierd as hell, though. They're actually fungi, and reproduce by hacking eachother to bits, releasing spores that grow into new Orks.
Warhammer is probably the easiest difference.

LotR is probably the subtlest

Tolkien made them up, afaik.
Probably inspired by something else, as well. Maybe old folktales?
According to the documentaries he derived heavily from many culture's folklore.

It is essentially modern english folklore.
Generally Goblins are the sneaky and cowardly type
ND ORKS ARE DA FIGHTERZ BIG N BAD ONEZ!

There was actually no difference in Toliens works. Elves called the creatures Orcs, dwarves tended to call them Goblins, Humans called them either depending on which race they heard it from first.

Orcris - Translated from elven is 'Goblin Cleaver'

But there were different breeds. You had standard goblins/orcs which were initially corruptions of the elves and so ironically the goblins actually share many traits of the elves such as longevity for example (though given their lifestyle this rarely comes up). Then you had the Uruk-hai which were created by saruman (perhaps under direction of Sauron) which were a larger strain strain, in which Sauron attempted to remove the weaknesses of the normal variet (particularly the aversion to sunlight. You could think of them as Goblin mixed with humans to bring out the worst traits of both.

Warcraft orcs are based on Warhammer Orks. Which is fitting since the game was originally supposed to be a licensed Warhammer game. The licensing deal fell through however and Blizzard just swapped a c for a k.

This is why I need to get off steam and chip away at the books more, I always thought it was a regional thing.

Well said and accurate, for a steam post.
